Man shot to death at New Mexico Walmart store

Occurred January 19, 2015.
Scene of fatal shooting at Albuquerque Walmart (source)

21-year old Angelo Martinez was leaving a Walmart store in Albuquerque, New Mexico, when he met a group of people entering the store.  An argument broke out between the groups, then someone in the group pulled out a gun and fired shots, hitting several cars in the parking lot and hitting Martinez.  Martinez later died from the wounds.

From an article:
Police say the 21-year-old was gunned down around 9 p.m. in a busy Walmart parking lot near Coors and Interstate 40 on Sunday. He died at the hospital.
Police were called to the Walmart at 2550 Coors NW after receiving calls about a fight.
While they were en route, callers reported that shots were fired and someone was hit.
Police haven’t said if the shooting happened inside or outside the store, but the victim’s father, Melvin Martinez, said witnesses told him the fight was in the doorway of the store. Angelo Martinez was walking in while another group was walking out and words were exchanged, Melvin Martinez said. The other group knocked off Angelo Martinez’s hat, then punches were thrown and someone shot him.
Melvin Martinez said the witnesses he talked to didn’t know if the two groups knew each other or if it was a random interaction. ....
There was still blood on the Walmart parking lot’s asphalt Monday morning and employees had blocked four parking spots with caution tape while they tried to get it cleaned up. A Walmart employee said two people came into the store Monday because their cars had been hit by bullets and they were trying to get reimbursed for the damage.
Albuquerque Police Department spokesman Tanner Tixier said nobody in the parking lot or store had a description of the suspect to give to police.

Occurred December 23, 2014.
Scene of fatal shooting at Clarksdale Walmart (screenshot source)

(UPDATED -- See below)

Three young men were in a Walmart store in Clarksdale, Mississippi, when they got into an argument with four other young men.

The argument spilled out into the parking lot, and the three men got into a vehicle.  That's when the other men pulled out a gun and shot the three in the car, then fled.

One of the three victims, aged 23, died from multiple gunshots at the scene.  The other two, ages 19 and 20, were wounded and taken to a hospital.

From an article:
Clarksdale Police said a 23-year-old Black man was shot multiple times in his upper torso and died from his injuries.

A 19-year-old Black male was shot in the neck and another Black male, age 20, was shot in the back, police said.

Both victims were taken to an area hospital. Their conditions are unknown. A witness told FOX13 News his cousin and two other passengers were sitting in the vehicle and another driver approached their vehicle. A gunman got out and shot the 23-year-old, who was a passenger in the back seat and then shot his 20-year-old cousin in the neck, who was sitting in the driver's seat. The 19-year-old who was sitting in the front passenger seat was then shot in the back.

Police said it appeared to be some type of confrontation inside the Walmart between the victims and four young Black male subjects. The shooting occurred once the victims were out in the parking lot.

Police said it appears to be a targeted shooting and not a random shooting.

There is no suspect information and the shooting remains under investigation.
From another article:

Investigators worked overnight to find the people who opened fire just two days before Christmas
"It's the wrong time for that. Within two days of the birth of Jesus Christ, and people still killing each other," said James Parks.
Investigators say an argument broke out inside the store, spilling over into the parking lot where several shots were fired.
"Could have hit anybody. Makes me want to get in my car and leave," Parks added.
Police say Tuesday's shooting was targeted. They're searching for three or four men who drove off in a dark colored SUV.
Nancy Bailey added, "You're kind of afraid for your life trying to come out and do what you need to do for the holidays. That's scary."

Scene of shooting at Tulsa Walmart (source)

(UPDATED -- See below)

Eric Santeliz, 20, met two other men in a car in the parking lot of a Walmart store in Tulsa, Oklahoma, for a drug deal.  He intended, instead, to rob the men.

But the other men pulled out a gun and shot Santeliz, wounding him.  Santeliz returned fire, killing one of the men and injuring another.

Police responded and took the survivors to the hospital, taking Santeliz into custody.

From an article:
One suspect was arrested at approximately 4:15 a.m. Tuesday morning. Eric Santeliz, 20, reportedly told officers that he had arranged the narcotics transaction knowing that he did not have enough money to complete the transaction.
Santeliz said he planned to rob the victim. When the subjects were in the vehicle about to make the drug transaction, the victim and another person inside the vehicle reportedly pulled out a gun. The victim shot Santeliz and as he exited the vehicle, and then the victim was shot and killed, the police report states.
Tulsa police detectives say the gun shots were exchanged inside a dark colored Nissan Altima.
Responding officers evacuated the store after reports that the shooter may have gone inside. The store was shut down until investigators were able to clear the scene. One shopper told KTUL that there was no loud P-A system announcement.
Two handguns were found in the parking lot near several cars.
The victim died after being shot in the head and taken to St. John's hospital. The other shooting victims were taken to Saint Francis Hospital after one was shot in the leg and the other was shot in the arm.
This is the 20th homicide of the year in Tulsa.
Tulsa Walmarts have seen other gun crimes since 2012, including a robbery in May, 2013, and a drunk shooting up the parking lot in July, 2012.

Political extremists kill two police and conceal handgun owner in pizza place and Nevada Walmart before being killed

Occurred June 8, 2014.
Scene of Las Vegas Walmart shooting (source)

Las Vegas police officers Alyn Beck, 41, and Igor Soldo, 31, were at a CiCi's pizza restaurant when they were ambushed by two shooters, a married couple, Jerad and Amanda Miller.  The shooters shouted "This is the start of a revolution!" and draped the dead bodies with a Gadsden flag.

The pair then went across the street to a Walmart store.  There they told everyone to get out, waving guns around and cursing.  From an article:

A law enforcement official who has been briefed on the incident said an officer — unconfirmed reports indicate it was Soldo — was refilling a soft drink when the female shooter approached him from behind and shot him in the head, killing him instantly.
The woman then shot the other officer several times as he drew his pistol. Gillespie said the officer was able to return fire but it was unclear if he hit anyone.
One officer was reported dead at the scene, while the other died later in surgery at University Medical Center.
Witnesses told police one of the shooters yelled “This is the start of a revolution” before shooting the officers. Gillespie later said he could not confirm that.
The shooters then stripped the officers of their weapons and ammunition and badges, according to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation. They then covered the officers with something that featured the Gadsden flag, a yellow banner with a coiled snake above the words, “Don’t tread on Me.”
The flag is named for Christopher Gadsden a Revolutionary War general who designed it. It has recently come back in vogue as an adopted symbol of the American tea party movement.
The shooters left the pizza parlor and headed into the Wal-Mart across the street at 201 North Nellis. Witnesses at the scene reported hearing shots fired in quick succession inside the Wal-Mart.
At a news conference at about 1 p.m. Assistant Sheriff Kevin McMahill said the male shooter, described as a tall white man, yelled “everyone get out” before shooting.

At this point, a citizen with a concealed handgun, Joseph Robert Wilcox, decided to intervene instead of flee.  Wilcox pulled his gun, but was ambushed and shot from behind by the female suspect, killing him.  From an article:

After executing two Las Vegas police officers at CiCi’s Pizza, Jerad Miller entered a nearby Wal-Mart, at Nellis Boulevard and Stewart Avenue, fired a round in the air and ordered everyone to leave, setting off a panic. It was at that point, instead of running, Wilcox approached Jerad Miller from behind.
Law enforcement sources said Wilcox, who had a concealed weapons permit and carried a handgun, was ready to “end it” when Amanda Miller, who was behind Wilcox, shot and killed him.

Wilcox had dreamed of being a police officer:

Wilcox had considered joining the Metropolitan Police Department several times, his mother said.

The pair of shooters then went deeper into the Walmart store.  From an article:

Both shooters were reportedly carrying large duffle bags, and a bomb squad was called to the scene. It’s unclear what, if anything, was found in the bags. A fire department official said the bomb squad response was “a precaution.”
Hector Garcia was shopping in Wal-Mart’s arts and crafts aisle toward the back of the store when he encountered a man brandishing a gun. He looked like he was in his 20s, was wearing camouflage and had a duffle bag draped over his shoulder.
He said the shooter appeared calm when he pointed the gun at him and said, “Don’t run.” The gunman, Garcia said, continued walking to the back of the store. Garcia said that store employees were evacuating customers through the back of the store.

More police and SWAT responded.  At this point there was a shootout (VIDEO), and both suspects were shot to death (initial reports were that the female had killed the male, but the police later refuted this and claimed police shot him; it appears that Amanda Miller committed suicide).

The Millers had armor-piercing bullets, were well-armed with a number of guns, and even smashed the gun case in the Walmart to continue arming themselves.  From an article:

Jerad and Amanda Miller wore adult diapers and carried four handguns, a shotgun, water and food, Gillespie said. The couple also smashed a Wal-Mart sporting-goods display case with a baseball bat to get more ammunition as they exchanged gunfire with SWAT officers, he said.
The husband and wife died June 8 after being cornered in the back of the store in the 15-minute shootout. In all, 52 shots were fired by the Millers and police inside the store. The husband and wife fired 36 shots, Gillespie said, and police fired 16.

The Millers had been part of the Bundy Ranch standoff, but were kicked out when their behavior was too extreme and dangerous.  Jerad Miller was also a felon.

Scene of fatal shooting at Murfreesboro Walmat (source)

(UPDATED -- see below)
Two young men, both age 19, were found shot to death in the parking lot of a Walmart in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

From an article:
The victims are Latre R. Lillard and Andre D. Chesterfield, both 19, Murfreesboro Police spokesman Sgt. Clyde Adkison said. The two men were cousins.
Chesterfield is a former running back and safety for Oakland High School’s football team. He graduated in 2012, his former coach Thomas McDaniel said.
McDaniel was shocked by his former player’s violent death, he said, because Chesterfield was a good student with a positive attitude. ....
“We have no suspects at this time,” Adkison said. “The investigation is ongoing.”
Officer Lo Sidadouangleuth reported that he responded to a call around midnight Wednesday from a local woman who said she found two men on the ground in the parking lot.
When the officer arrived, he saw “a lot of blood near both subjects’ head area, they were deceased,” he reported.
Sidadouangleth also found pieces of shattered vehicle windows near both subjects.

UPDATE (7/10/14):  Two brothers have been indicted for the murder of Lillard and Chesterfield.  From an article:

Danarius Coleman and his brother, Demetrius, both originally from Chicago are to be arraigned on first-degree murder charges July 21, according to Circuit Court records. They are accused in the Jan. 29 shooting deaths of Latre Lillard, 19, and Andre Chesterfield, 19, of Murfreesboro, whose bloody bodies were found in the store parking lot off Thompson Lane. ...
Danarius Coleman’s girlfriend, Ladorothy Morrison, testified in a March preliminary hearing that he told her he was getting ready for “an easy takedown” in a drug-deal robbery and later admitted he killed two people.
Morrison testified she was working at Steak & Shake in Antioch that night when Danarius texted her and told her “something horrible happened” and he needed her to be with him.
Morrison said she when he met her at his apartment that night he was carrying a bloody garbage bag and then told her about the murder and showed her cell-phone video from the shooting scene.
“He basically said it was either him or them because they had guns on them, too,” she testified.
Police targeted the Colemans as suspects after Demetrius reported his vehicle stolen the next morning. Authorities found the vehicle burned up and with some of the windows blown out.
Danarius Coleman was arrested Feb. 5 at his Antioch apartment, and Murfreesboro Police arrested Demetrius Coleman two weeks later in Chicago with the help of authorities there.

Pennsylvania Walmart employee shot to death in store parking lot by ex-boyfriend

Occurred November 17, 2013.
Scene of shooting at New Brighton Walmart (source)

22-year old Mariah Anderson, an employee at a Walmart store in New Brighton, Pennsylvania, was just driving out of the parking lot after work when shots were fired into her car, killing her.  The shots were fired by her ex-boyfriend and the father of her children, 27-year-old Carlos Harper.

Police tracked Harper down at his apartment.  Harper fired at least one shot at them with his .40-caliber handgun, then turned the gun on himself, killing himself.

Their three children, ages 1, 3, and 4, now are orphans.

Harper had been stalking her prior to that point, waiting for her after her work, and had been jailed for assaulting Anderson a week before, but was out on bond.

The victim's sister said that Mariah had been afraid to go to work because of being stalked by the shooter.

From an article:
Police said Harper shot Mariah Anderson, 22, after she was escorted to her car by a coworker outside a Walmart in Union Township, near New Castle, on Sunday night.
Investigators say Anderson had just finished her shift at the store and was driving away in her SUV when several shots were fired into the vehicle at about 11:15 p.m. Anderson died on the way to the hospital.
"There is some video from Walmart and some witness interviews that were done that led us to the suspect," Lt. Eric Hermick said.
Anderson had three children, ages 1, 3, and 4, according to her sister, who also said that Anderson had recently broken up with the father of her children. She said that Anderson had filed for a protection-from-abuse order, and that police had taken the man away from the store a couple of times before Sunday.  ....
"Every day, he'll be at her job, sitting out, waiting for her to get off so he could follow her. Every day, she would have to call the police," Anderson's sister said. "It got to the point where he was hiding in her trunk of her car and just following her around from work and having people go to her job, watching her, things of that nature."
A criminal complaint was filed Wednesday against Harper, and it lists charges of simple assault (domestic violence), false imprisonment, indecent assault and harassment.
Anderson is identified as the victim in that incident, which happened at her home, according to the paperwork.

After gunshots were reported, two people were found dead in a car in the parking lot of a Walmart in Salem, Ohio.

From an article:
According to the Salem Police Department Facebook page, two people were found dead in the Walmart parking lot. At Approximately 2:40 a.m. Salem police received a 911 call of reported shots fired at the Walmart, 2875 E. State St. Upon arrival, officers located a deceased female and male in the southeast parking lot of the store. A Ruger 9mm semi-automatic handgun was also located near the male. Several witnesses have been interviewed and store security video is being analyzed.
According to another article, it was a murder/suicide, where the shooter killed his former girlfriend and then himself.

The female victim, Sylvia Maillis, 37, was an overnight support manager at the Walmart.  Her ex-boyfriend who did the shooting, Charles Kropinak, 36, had a conceal carry license.  From another article:

She exited her vehicle and the two argued, then Kropinak pulled out a 9mm Ruger semi-automatic handgun and shot Maillis multiple times before shooting himself.

Two dead in shooting that started at California Walmart parking lot

Occurred August 2, 2013.
Where the shooting began at Porterville Walmart
(from Google Maps)

Two men died in a shooting that began in the parking lot of a Walmart in Porterville, California.

Multiple shots were fired between two groups in the parking lot.  The battle continued as the groups got into vehicles and drove off through the city, continuing to fire at each other, until one vehicle rammed another and they crashed.

From an article:
According to police, the fatal shoot out began when a man driving a white Lexus SUV came out of Office Max in the shopping center and got into a confrontation with two men in a brown GMC Yukon. Witness told of a horrifying scene where more than 10 shots were fired and then ducking for cover. (See accompanying story).
The shooting continued as the two victims left in the Yukon, chased by the man in his vehicle. They went west on Henderson Avenue. Witnesses said the two vehicles were ramming each other as they traveled down Henderson, eventually both of them crashing.
Witnesses also reported hearing gun shots just before the Yukon was rammed and lost control. It ended up straddling the median, facing north, on Henderson right about in front of the Vietnam War memorial and across from the basketball courts at Monache High School.
“The guy in the white car smacked them and pushed them onto the divider,” said witness John Wilson, who said the sound of gunshots caught his attention.
Wilson and another witness, Blake Bond, said the Lexus also spun around and the driver quickly got out and ran over to the Yukon and retrieved two backpacks. “He grabbed them and ran to his car,” said Bond.
It was at that time a Porterville motorcycle officer who was responding to the numerous 9-1-1 calls about the Office Max shooting, caught up to the scene and arrested the Lexus driver at gun point. ....
The back window, the driver’s side window and the front passenger side window of the Yukon all appeared to have been shot out. Bullet holes were also evident in the windshield of that vehicle, but there did not appear to be any shattered windows on the Lexus.
Witnesses said no shots were fired once the two vehicles stopped.
The Yukon had damage on the passenger side and the Lexus on the driver’s side from the ramming. Parts of the vehicles were left along the roadway. Dempsie agreed they had about a quarter of a mile long crime scene and it would take time to sort everything out.

Pennsylvania man shoots and kills girlfriend with shotgun shells purchased at Walmart

Occurred May 21, 2013.

Gregory Twyman, 44, posted a picture on Facebook of shotgun shells he had purchased at Walmart the week before and announced his plans to kill his girlfriend, in Chester County, Pennsylvania.

The next day, as he planned, he shot his girlfriend, Jamica Woods, several times in the torso with his shotgun.  He then called 911 to turn himself in.

From an article (bolding added):
"Jamica Woods was a kind and loving mother," District Attorney Tom Hogan said in a statement. "This crime was a cold-blooded execution. We will seek justice for Jamica's death."
Woods was killed by several shotgun wounds to her torso.

In Hogan's notice of intent to seek the death penalty, he says Twyman has "a significant history of felony convictions involving the use or threat of violence to the person," an aggravating circumstance in support of a death sentence.
The day before the shooting, Twyman posted a photo of a shotgun shell he bought at Walmart on his Facebook page.
A friend asked what it was, and he identified it as a shell, according to court documents.
The friend said: "I'm calling the ATF on your ass now...LOL...."
Twyman wrote: "Gon be too late."
Another friend wrote: "CIA FBI ATF u know snitches be lurking amongst us on here… lol."

Twyman replied: "Once I handle my business I don’t give a f---!"

Then, on May 21, authorities say, he called 911 and said: "I need the police, I just shot my girlfriend."
The prosecution's death penalty notice will be formally entered when Twyman is arraigned on Thursday.

From another article and news video (bolding added):
Chester County District Attorney Thomas Hogan called it a "premeditated and cruel."
"This was not an argument, this was a pre-planned execution," Hogan said.
Hogan said that Twyman took his time to reload the shotgun to deliver a second shot.
Twyman, 44, told police that after weeks of fighting he decided to shoot Woods, 37, with shotgun shells he bought "last week at Walmart."
Police say Twyman predicted the shooting on his Facebook page. The day before the homicide police say that Twyman made his Facebook profile photo a shotgun shell and the banner photo of his own shotgun, according to the affidavit.

Deadly shooting at Florida Walmart parking lot

Scene of fatal shooting at Jacksonville Walmart
Occurred February 26, 2013.

Two young men were sitting in a car in the parking lot of a Walmart in Jacksonville, Florida, when a third man walked up to the car, possibly entering the vehicle.

Shots rang out, shot by that third man, who then fled.  The two men in the car fled as well, to a nearby gas station.  One of them was injured and later died.

From an article and news video:

"Officers went on location at both scenes simultaneously. What we found here was a victim with life-threatening injuries, he'd been shot. He was taken to Shands (Jacksonville Medical Center) and has since died, so this is a homicide," Judge said.
Homicide detectives were interviewing witnesses and searching for the shooter.
"Talking to witnesses, it appears the victim and another male were in the vehicle together, when a third male approached them on foot," JSO Sgt. Shawn Coarsey said.
"The third male possibly got into the vehicle with them. Something happened at that point. Shots were fired. The third male got out of the vehicle and fled on foot."
Investigators did not know if the suspect knew the victim and his friend.

UPDATE (3/1/13):  The victim is identified as 21-year old Anthony Blake Bannister.

The shooting was apparently a drug deal gone bad.  Two people have been charged in the shooting.  From the article:

Jameel Malik Burroughs, 19, was the triggerman who shot twice into a car with two men inside, said Lt. Rob Schoonover. He and De’Jon Frazier, 18, were charged with murder Thursday.
Burroughs and Frazier, who are roommates in the 8000 block of Atlantic Boulevard, attended welding school with the victim, Anthony Bannister, 20 and his companion in the car, Frederick L. Philips Jr., 19.
Schoonover said Burroughs and Frazier were arrested at the Tulsa welding school less than 48 hours after the shooting.
The four met to make a marijuana deal about 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Walmart at 8808 Beach Boulevard. At some point in the deal, Burroughs got out of the car and shot twice, Schoonover said. Phillips, who was not wounded, drove Bannister to a nearby gas station. From there, Bannister was transported to Shands Jacksonville and died.
Schoonover said the robbery was planned. Marijuana taken in the shooting was found in Burroughs’ and Frazier’s apartment.
UPDATE (8/13/13):  A Facebook page was set up in honor of the victim, Blake, back in March.
