Guns stolen from Arkansas Walmart on day after Christmas

Occurred December 26, 2014.
Scene of stolen guns at Helena Walmart (source)

On the day after Christmas, thieves entered the Walmart store in Helena-West Helena, Arkansas (Walmart's home state), while the store was closed for business.  There they smashed a display case with a hammer and stole four guns, as well as some electronic goods, and fled.

The article does not state what kind of guns were stolen.  Walmart sells assault rifles and hunting rifles.

From an article and news video:
Police report several guns were taken as well as a number of iPods, iPads and iPhones.
The store, on Shelia Street in Helena-West Helena,  is usually opened 24-hours but it was closed Christmas and wasn’t scheduled to re-open till 9 a.m. the following day.
It’s believed the break-in happened just after 2:00 a.m. on the 26th.
Eli Moore, who shops at the Walmart regularly, is very concerned even though the burglary happened while the store was closed.
“I come out here and shop at Walmart all the time, you know. My wife told me, ‘you don’t need to go out there at night.’ So, with this happening here it’s got me scared to come out here now,” said Eli Moore.
According to Helena-West Helena Police, a glass display case in the sporting goods section was smashed and four guns were taken.
In the electronics section two cases were broken, and police reportedly found a hammer and drops of blood near the shattered glass.

Two men steal rifles in Christmas tree box at Kentucky Walmart store

Occurred October 11, 2014.

Two men entered a Walmart store in Frankfort, Kentucky, removed an artificial Christmas tree from its box, then hid three muzzleloader rifles in the box.  They then brazenly paid for what the clerk thought was the tree, then they walked out with it, despite an alarm going off and having to show a receipt.

Surveillance video allegedly shows the two remove an artificial Christmas tree from its box and then fill the box with three muzzleloader rifles that they took from a security case, Warfel said.
The two then separated and one of the men allegedly used a U-Scan station to pay $25 in cash for the tree.
Warfel said the store’s security alarm sounded as he left the store but he showed an employee the receipt for the Christmas tree in his cart and was allowed to leave.
The other man left the store a few minutes later.

Man steals assault rifle from Montana Walmart display case

Occurred September 7, 2014.

Schuyler Stewart Zwar has been arrested for entering a Billings, Montana, Walmart and going to the sporting goods area where, after asking to see some guns for sale, threatened an employee with a knife, then later returned and smashed a display case, stealing a Bushmaster model M-16, .223-caliber semi-automatic rifle, then fleeing.

From an article:
Zwar is seen on store security video pushing a large trash can into the store then walking to the sporting goods area.
Documents state Zwar looked at firearms in a display case then asked an employee for assistance to open the case.
After the employee took five firearms out of the case at 12:22 p.m. Zwar grabbed the employee.
The clerk said Zwar held a knife to his throat and tried to cut him several times, documents state.
The clerk told authorities he was calmly able to get away and Zwar left the sporting goods area.
Zwar returned less than a minute later swinging a large yellow crow bar, documents state.
Zwar "smashed the glass out of the display case and removed one firearm," documents state.
Walmart staff determined the firearm was a Bushmaster model M-16, .223-caliber semi-automatic rifle.
Zwar left the store at 12:24 p.m. using the automotive entrance and pulling a large black trash can, documents state.
Witnesses told officers the man left in a white vehicle, similar to a Subaru, with Washington state plates. ....
"The vehicle then led troopers on a pursuit for approximately 20 miles," the document states. "The vehicle was ultimately stopped after using spike strips to disable the tires and the driver identified as Schuyler Stewart Zwar."
After Zwar was taken into custody for the traffic offenses, troopers recovered a receipt for a crowbar that was purchased at a hardware store in Gillette, Wyo. earlier that day.
 ...
A search warrant was served on the vehicle and the rifle from Walmart, three boxes of ammunition, and the crowbar were recovered.

Ohio man threatens Walmart shoppers with realistic-looking pellet rifle and is shot to death by police

Occurred August 5, 2014.
Scene of shooting at Beavercreek Walmart (source)

(UPDATED -- See below)

22-year old John Crawford was seen loading a rifle in a Walmart store in Beavercreek, Ohio, near Dayton, then threatening customers, including children, with it.  Police responded and shot him to death when he wouldn't drop the weapon.

During the evacuation, a 37-year old woman, Angela Williams, also collapsed and died, apparently due to unrelated health issues, while trying to evacuate herself and her two children.

From an article:
Authorities say a customer also died after suffering a medical problem during the evacuation of the store Tuesday. Police identified her as Angela Williams, 37, of Fairborn.
Police identified the man shot Tuesday night at a Wal-Mart in the Dayton suburb of Beavercreek as 22-year-old John Crawford of Cincinnati. He died at a hospital.
It's unclear why he had the weapon in the store. A statement from police didn't address Crawford's motives or provide further details about him. No phone was listed for Crawford at the address police had for him.
Beavercreek police said initial investigations indicate the officers responded appropriately. State investigators will review the shooting.
A man who witnessed the scene told a 911 dispatcher that a man with a rifle was near the pet supplies section and appeared to be loading the firearm.
"There is a gentleman walking around with a gun in the store. ... He's, like, pointing it at people," the witness said. Later in the call, sounds like gunshots can be heard, followed by someone screaming for people to leave.
Wal-Mart spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said by email Wednesday that the company is working with investigators and is "deeply saddened about the loss of life."

Walmart is "deeply saddened," but not enough to actually change any of their gun sales or gun carrying policies.

It turns out the rifle was a realistic-looking pellet gun, which Crawford stole and loaded while inside the store.  From another article:
A law enforcement source tells the Dayton Daily News and News Center 7 that the gun used in the Walmart shooting was a realistic-looking toy gun. ....
[Customer] Ronald Ritche said the man "was just waving it at children and people. Items.... I couldn't hear anything that he was saying. I'm thinking that he is either going to rob the place or he's there to shoot somebody else." The man looked kind of serious, Ronald Ritchie said. "He didn't really want to be looked at and when people did look at him, he was pointing the gun at them. He was pointing at people. Children walking by."
HERE is more information on the gun in question.  HERE is Walmart's online sales page for the black version (it also comes in tan).

In two years, I've chronicled at least 23 incidents involving realistic-looking pellet guns used in crimes and shootings at Walmart stores.  How many does it take for Walmart to stop selling these dangerous items?

Pellet guns are not toys, and there is no good reason for them to look like the real thing!

UPDATE (8/9/14):  The woman who collapsed while trying to get her children to safety, Angela Williams, was shopping for school supplies and for her upcoming wedding that weekend.

UPDATE (8/9/14):  More information on the realistic-looking pellet gun that the suspect was using to threaten people and that got him shot to death, from an article:

a “variable pump air rifle” made by Crosman Corp.
The owner’s manual for the MK-177 BB/Pellet rifle warns that misuse can result in serious injury or death. And it specifically warns about waving it in public. “Police and others may think it is a firearm,” the manual states.
There was no immediate response to an email seeking comment sent Thursday to the Rochester, New York-based manufacturer.

And, no, it's not a "toy."  These realistic-looking guns are very regularly used by adults and kids to rob, intimidate, threaten, injure, and even kill.

UPDATE (8/9/14):  Despite at least 25 incidents of crimes committed at Walmart stores in just the last couple years using realistic-looking pellet guns, Walmart refuses to stop selling them

A similar-looking Bushmaster ACR assault rifle
UPDATE (8/9/14):  The suspect's girlfriend spoke out about the suspect.  They had two small children together, ages 1 and 4.  According to her, the suspect did not enter the store with the gun.

UPDATE (8/10/14):  A pro-gun, anti-cop group is protesting outside the Walmart store where this occurred.  But instead of protesting the fact that Walmart sells pellet guns that are so realistic that even police can't tell them apart, they are protesting the police for shooting the suspect!

Political extremists kill two police and conceal handgun owner in pizza place and Nevada Walmart before being killed

Occurred June 8, 2014.
Scene of Las Vegas Walmart shooting (source)

Las Vegas police officers Alyn Beck, 41, and Igor Soldo, 31, were at a CiCi's pizza restaurant when they were ambushed by two shooters, a married couple, Jerad and Amanda Miller.  The shooters shouted "This is the start of a revolution!" and draped the dead bodies with a Gadsden flag.

The pair then went across the street to a Walmart store.  There they told everyone to get out, waving guns around and cursing.  From an article:

A law enforcement official who has been briefed on the incident said an officer — unconfirmed reports indicate it was Soldo — was refilling a soft drink when the female shooter approached him from behind and shot him in the head, killing him instantly.
The woman then shot the other officer several times as he drew his pistol. Gillespie said the officer was able to return fire but it was unclear if he hit anyone.
One officer was reported dead at the scene, while the other died later in surgery at University Medical Center.
Witnesses told police one of the shooters yelled “This is the start of a revolution” before shooting the officers. Gillespie later said he could not confirm that.
The shooters then stripped the officers of their weapons and ammunition and badges, according to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation. They then covered the officers with something that featured the Gadsden flag, a yellow banner with a coiled snake above the words, “Don’t tread on Me.”
The flag is named for Christopher Gadsden a Revolutionary War general who designed it. It has recently come back in vogue as an adopted symbol of the American tea party movement.
The shooters left the pizza parlor and headed into the Wal-Mart across the street at 201 North Nellis. Witnesses at the scene reported hearing shots fired in quick succession inside the Wal-Mart.
At a news conference at about 1 p.m. Assistant Sheriff Kevin McMahill said the male shooter, described as a tall white man, yelled “everyone get out” before shooting.

At this point, a citizen with a concealed handgun, Joseph Robert Wilcox, decided to intervene instead of flee.  Wilcox pulled his gun, but was ambushed and shot from behind by the female suspect, killing him.  From an article:

After executing two Las Vegas police officers at CiCi’s Pizza, Jerad Miller entered a nearby Wal-Mart, at Nellis Boulevard and Stewart Avenue, fired a round in the air and ordered everyone to leave, setting off a panic. It was at that point, instead of running, Wilcox approached Jerad Miller from behind.
Law enforcement sources said Wilcox, who had a concealed weapons permit and carried a handgun, was ready to “end it” when Amanda Miller, who was behind Wilcox, shot and killed him.

Wilcox had dreamed of being a police officer:

Wilcox had considered joining the Metropolitan Police Department several times, his mother said.

The pair of shooters then went deeper into the Walmart store.  From an article:

Both shooters were reportedly carrying large duffle bags, and a bomb squad was called to the scene. It’s unclear what, if anything, was found in the bags. A fire department official said the bomb squad response was “a precaution.”
Hector Garcia was shopping in Wal-Mart’s arts and crafts aisle toward the back of the store when he encountered a man brandishing a gun. He looked like he was in his 20s, was wearing camouflage and had a duffle bag draped over his shoulder.
He said the shooter appeared calm when he pointed the gun at him and said, “Don’t run.” The gunman, Garcia said, continued walking to the back of the store. Garcia said that store employees were evacuating customers through the back of the store.

More police and SWAT responded.  At this point there was a shootout (VIDEO), and both suspects were shot to death (initial reports were that the female had killed the male, but the police later refuted this and claimed police shot him; it appears that Amanda Miller committed suicide).

The Millers had armor-piercing bullets, were well-armed with a number of guns, and even smashed the gun case in the Walmart to continue arming themselves.  From an article:

Jerad and Amanda Miller wore adult diapers and carried four handguns, a shotgun, water and food, Gillespie said. The couple also smashed a Wal-Mart sporting-goods display case with a baseball bat to get more ammunition as they exchanged gunfire with SWAT officers, he said.
The husband and wife died June 8 after being cornered in the back of the store in the 15-minute shootout. In all, 52 shots were fired by the Millers and police inside the store. The husband and wife fired 36 shots, Gillespie said, and police fired 16.

The Millers had been part of the Bundy Ranch standoff, but were kicked out when their behavior was too extreme and dangerous.  Jerad Miller was also a felon.

Man steals three rifles from Arizona Walmart

Occurred week of April 21, 2014.

A transient man, Daniel Justin Miranda, 46, is suspected of stealing three rifles from a Walmart store in Phoenix, Arizona.  One of those rifles was sold, but later recovered.  The other two were recovered upon catching Miranda.

From an article:

Miranda was caught when last Friday afternoon some patrol officers observed an unknown subject sell a rifle, later determined to be one of the stolen rifles from the Walmart burglary, to two people in a hotel parking lot near 17th Avenue and Bell Road. The subjects bought the rifle, worth $1,497, for $200 and when they were contacted by police admitted to believing the rifle was stolen.
Both subjects were booked into jail at that time for theft control of stolen property and other charges. ....

Police established surveillance in the area where Miranda, a transient, was known to frequent, and by mid-afternoon on the 29th he was taken into custody and the two additional stolen rifles were recovered.
Holmes said Miranda not only admitted to burglarizing the Walmart, but also burglarizing a Sprouts grocery store near Central Avenue and Bell Road, also on April 25.
Miranda was booked into jail and charged with two counts of burglary, trafficking in stolen property and three counts of misconduct involving weapons/prohibited possessor, all felonies.

The article didn't say what kind of rifles were stolen, or the circumstances under which they were stolen.

Man tries to steal rifle from Texas Walmart and gets shot by police in parking lot

Occurred March 21, 2014.
Scene of San Angelo Walmart shooting (source)

42-year-old Charles D. Welborn went into a Walmart superstore in San Angelo, Texas.  He grabbed a hammer, went to the sporting goods area, and then smashed a gun case, telling the clerk that he had a bomb.  He pulled out a rifle and tried to get away with it, pointing it at other shoppers.

A Walmart employee managed to wrestle the gun away from Welborn, then Welborn fled into the parking lot.

Police responded, finding Welborn in the parking lot.  Welborn then attacked police with a broken bottle, at which point they shot and injured him, hitting him three times.

From an article:
San Angelo's Northside Wal-mart re-opened just before ten Monday night; and 42-year-old Charles D. Welborn remains in the hospital after being shot by police.
The shooting followed an aggravated robbery at the Wal-mart on West 28th Street at about 2:40 Monday afternoon. The store and parking lot were closed off for several hours as police collected evidence, but re-opened late Monday evening.
About a dozen employees waited from across the street for the store to re-open.
Police say Welborn broke into a gun display case in the store, and took a rifle; then ran out after an employee took the rifle away from him.
Police shot Welborn in the parking lot after they say he charged at them with a broken bottle after refusing orders; medics transported him to Shannon Medical Center.
Further details can be found in another article.

Welborn later died from his injuries.

According to family members, Welborn had suffered from depression and alcoholism brought on by the suicide of a teen daughter, the death of an infant daughter from SIDS, and then the death of his wife from cancer.

Nine assault rifles stolen from Memphis Walmart gun case in two separate robberies

Occurred January 27 and February 11, 2014.

In two separate robberies, suspects entered a Walmart store in Memphis, Tennessee, and took rifles right out of the display case in the gun department, then left the store with them.  In at least one instance, the key to the display case had been attached to the back of the case, in plain sight.

From an article:
A Memphis Police spokeswoman says two rifles were stolen on January 27th. On February 11th, seven more rifles worth a total of $6,400 were stolen.

"Things are constantly getting crazier by the day," Valencia Jones said. "You just wouldn't expect that out here, you would probably expect that somewhere else in another part of town."

According to a police report, a manager told officers that the gun case was new and the keys were stuck to the back of the gun case.

A Walmart spokeswoman says all of the guns and ammunition at the store on the 500 block of Germantown Parkway have been locked up, and customers can purchase them by talking with a manager.

"They need better security on their stuff," Bo Martin said. "There goes the crime rate."
Another article details what model the guns were.  All nine of the rifles were semi-automatic assault rifles:
Stolen were:
Colt M4 Carbine (3)
DPM Panther Arms A-5
Sigsauer 522
Bushmaster XM15-e2s
Sigsauer Sigm400
It has people worried now that the weapons may be on the streets.
One man who heard about the crimes, Jimmy Bloodsworth, said, “That’s terrible! I’d hate to run into someone that has them.” ....
For some, it is raising questions as to whether stores like Walmart should even sell these types of guns.
“I mean, I believe in second amendment rights, but to have guns like that to where they can be stolen and get into the wrong hands…That’s just terrible,” Bloodsworth said.

Police identify one of the stolen weapons as the same model Bushmaster brand rifle used in the 2012 Sandy Hook School massacre in Newtown, Conn., where 20 children and six adults were murdered.
"I have a child and don't want anything to happen to my child, and that means guns are just going to be out on the street," said resident Nikenya Rudd.

Man steals realistic BB gun from Louisiana Walmart, tries carjacking, robs store, and shot dead by police

Occurred December 28, 2013.

A 22-year old man, Joseph Glenn, stole a realistic-looking BB gun from a Walmart store in Ruston, Louisiana.  He then tried to use the gun to carjack or kidnap a woman in the Walmart parking lot.

Later, he used the gun in a robbery of a gas station.  When police showed up at his hotel room, Glenn brandished the gun and was shot by police.  He later died from his wounds.  It was only after this point that police realized the gun was a BB gun.

From an article:
Around midnight, Ruston Police responded to an armed robbery at a gas station on Louisiana Highway 33 in Ruston. Later, officers were called to an aggravated kidnapping at Walmart. A description of the subject, and evidence from both scenes, led police to identify Joseph Glenn, 22, of Grambling as the suspect in both crimes. ....
Surveillance footage from the Walmart in Ruston shows the suspect stealing the BB pistol from the store. According to sources close to the investigation, this was just before the suspect attempted to steal a car from the Walmart parking lot with a woman inside.
The suspect was identified as Joseph Glenn of Grambling, and was located early Sunday morning at the Hampton Inn in Ruston. That's where he drew his weapon, and was shot by Ruston Police officers.
Glenn was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
There is no reason for BB guns to look realistic, and no reason for Walmart to sell them.
