Occurred December 24, 2014.
Scene of children stealing guns at Florida Walmart (source)

On Christmas Eve, three boys, ages 12, 13, and 16, entered a Walmart store in Royal Palm Beach, Florida, and drew the attention of security as they "cased the store."  The three boys then shoplifted a number of items, including three handguns and part of a rifle.  When they tried to leave the store, security and police confronted the boys and arrested the two youngest immediately and the oldest after he tried to flee.

From the look of the picture to the right, from the link below, at least one of the handguns may have been a realistic-looking Airsoft pellet gun.

From an article and news video:
Guns stolen by the boys
Three juveniles were arrested Saturday at the Walmart store on Belvedere Road in Royal Palm Beach after they attempted to steal weapons, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.
The trio were met by PBSO deputies as they left the store.
Walmart's loss prevention staff noticed the 12, 13 and 16-year-olds "casing" the store, according to PBSO, notified the sheriff's office and locked down the store.
Officials say all three juveniles fled from the store with deputies awaiting them around the perimeter of the building.
The 16-year-old fled on foot and was quickly captured by a K-9 officer. PBSO says the other two juveniles were captured without incident.
All three suspects have been transported to JAC unit and will be charged with Retail Grand Theft. The 16-year-old will also be charged with Resisting Arrest.

Occurred December 24, 2014.

It happened overnight when the two males walked into the store and took a brand new BB gun out of its box.
Police said they then loaded the gun and fired four separate times while inside the store.
The two eventually walked up to a loss prevention officer and asked if he wanted to join them.
They then walked out of the store, but several officers and a deputy were able to locate and arrest the two men.

Massachusetts couple purchase realistic-looking pellet gun at Walmart then rob the store with it

Occurred November 8, 2014.

A couple, Molly K. McKeen, 25, and Cortez D. Palmer, 37, walked into a Walmart store in Oxford, Massachusetts, and purchased, among other things, a realistic-looking pellet gun.

Shortly after leaving the store, Palmer returned and used the gun to threaten a Walmart clerk, demanding money.  The couple then fled.  Many other stores were also robbed, possibly with the same pellet gun.

From an article:
Molly K. McKeen, 25, of 6 Knox St., Worcester; and Cortez D. Palmer, 37, of 68 Merrick St., Worcester, allegedly entered the Walmart in Oxford on Nov. 8 and made several purchases, including a pellet gun, the affidavits on file in Central District Court said.

Surveillance footage obtained from the store shows Ms. McKeen using a debit/credit card to make the purchases. The two left the store, but Mr. Palmer returned with a black handgun, which authorities believe was the pellet gun just purchased, the records said.

Mr. Palmer is accused of approaching the guest services counter and telling the clerk to look down. He allegedly showed the clerk the handgun and demanded cash. The robbery netted $8,681, the affidavits said.

Ms. McKeen has been arraignedon a charge of unarmed robbery. Mr. Palmer faces several counts of unarmed robbery and one count of armed robbery in connection with a cluster of robberies in Worcester and other area towns. He also has been arraigned in Central District Court.

Worcester police said they linked six robberies to one or all of the suspects. Mr. Palmer allegedly robbed multiple supermarkets, a Walmart and one Dunkin' Donuts in the city from September to November.
Realistic-looking pellet guns have been used in numerous gun crimes at Walmart stores.

Despite this history, Walmart continues to sell many models of realistic-looking pellet, BB, and toy guns.

Ohio man threatens Walmart shoppers with realistic-looking pellet rifle and is shot to death by police

Occurred August 5, 2014.
Scene of shooting at Beavercreek Walmart (source)

(UPDATED -- See below)

22-year old John Crawford was seen loading a rifle in a Walmart store in Beavercreek, Ohio, near Dayton, then threatening customers, including children, with it.  Police responded and shot him to death when he wouldn't drop the weapon.

During the evacuation, a 37-year old woman, Angela Williams, also collapsed and died, apparently due to unrelated health issues, while trying to evacuate herself and her two children.

From an article:
Authorities say a customer also died after suffering a medical problem during the evacuation of the store Tuesday. Police identified her as Angela Williams, 37, of Fairborn.
Police identified the man shot Tuesday night at a Wal-Mart in the Dayton suburb of Beavercreek as 22-year-old John Crawford of Cincinnati. He died at a hospital.
It's unclear why he had the weapon in the store. A statement from police didn't address Crawford's motives or provide further details about him. No phone was listed for Crawford at the address police had for him.
Beavercreek police said initial investigations indicate the officers responded appropriately. State investigators will review the shooting.
A man who witnessed the scene told a 911 dispatcher that a man with a rifle was near the pet supplies section and appeared to be loading the firearm.
"There is a gentleman walking around with a gun in the store. ... He's, like, pointing it at people," the witness said. Later in the call, sounds like gunshots can be heard, followed by someone screaming for people to leave.
Wal-Mart spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said by email Wednesday that the company is working with investigators and is "deeply saddened about the loss of life."

Walmart is "deeply saddened," but not enough to actually change any of their gun sales or gun carrying policies.

It turns out the rifle was a realistic-looking pellet gun, which Crawford stole and loaded while inside the store.  From another article:
A law enforcement source tells the Dayton Daily News and News Center 7 that the gun used in the Walmart shooting was a realistic-looking toy gun. ....
[Customer] Ronald Ritche said the man "was just waving it at children and people. Items.... I couldn't hear anything that he was saying. I'm thinking that he is either going to rob the place or he's there to shoot somebody else." The man looked kind of serious, Ronald Ritchie said. "He didn't really want to be looked at and when people did look at him, he was pointing the gun at them. He was pointing at people. Children walking by."
HERE is more information on the gun in question.  HERE is Walmart's online sales page for the black version (it also comes in tan).

In two years, I've chronicled at least 23 incidents involving realistic-looking pellet guns used in crimes and shootings at Walmart stores.  How many does it take for Walmart to stop selling these dangerous items?

Pellet guns are not toys, and there is no good reason for them to look like the real thing!

UPDATE (8/9/14):  The woman who collapsed while trying to get her children to safety, Angela Williams, was shopping for school supplies and for her upcoming wedding that weekend.

UPDATE (8/9/14):  More information on the realistic-looking pellet gun that the suspect was using to threaten people and that got him shot to death, from an article:

a “variable pump air rifle” made by Crosman Corp.
The owner’s manual for the MK-177 BB/Pellet rifle warns that misuse can result in serious injury or death. And it specifically warns about waving it in public. “Police and others may think it is a firearm,” the manual states.
There was no immediate response to an email seeking comment sent Thursday to the Rochester, New York-based manufacturer.

And, no, it's not a "toy."  These realistic-looking guns are very regularly used by adults and kids to rob, intimidate, threaten, injure, and even kill.

UPDATE (8/9/14):  Despite at least 25 incidents of crimes committed at Walmart stores in just the last couple years using realistic-looking pellet guns, Walmart refuses to stop selling them.

UPDATE (8/9/14):  The suspect's girlfriend spoke out about the suspect.  They had two small children together, ages 1 and 4.  According to her, the suspect did not enter the store with the gun.

UPDATE (8/10/14):  A pro-gun, anti-cop group is protesting outside the Walmart store where this occurred.  But instead of protesting the fact that Walmart sells pellet guns that are so realistic that even police can't tell them apart, they are protesting the police for shooting the suspect!

Woman shot in the eye by man with BB gun in California Walmart parking lot

Occurred May 17, 2014.
Scene of Stevenson Ranch Walmart shooting (source)

A woman named "Megan" got into an argument with 28-year old Cory Flenory, a parolee, in the parking lot of a Walmart store in Stevenson Ranch, California.  She got into her car, and the suspect followed, then shot into Megan's car with a BB gun, hitting her in the eye.

She was taken to the hospital and had hours of surgery.  It wasn't known whether she would regain eyesight.

The suspect was tracked down and arrested.

From an article:
A 28-year-old man was arrested after he was accused of shooting a woman in the eye with a BB gun following an argument at a Stevenson Ranch Walmart.
The shooting occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday near the store located near Old Road and Pico Canyon Road. Deputy Josh Dubin of the L.A. County Sheriff's Department told City News Service that there was an argument in the Walmart parking lot between the alleged gunman and the 22-year-old woman (who did not know each other) before she was shot.
The victim, who's only identified as Megan, and her boyfriend told authorities that the man followed them out of the Walmart parking lot and rammed his car into theirs, according to KTLA. They kept on driving and when they were stopped at a traffic light, the suspect reportedly drove next to them and fired a BB gun through the passenger-seat window, hitting Megan's right eye.
She was taken to a hospital and underwent seven hours of surgery. Doctors are hoping she'll regain her sight. Megan's aunt Diana told KTLA that Megan's vision in her left eye was already weak since childhood. Megan's boyfriend was not injured.
Deputies arrested Cory Flenory at 8 a.m. today at his home on the 28100 block of McBean Parkway in Valencia. He put up a fight and kicked out the window of the patrol car before the deputies pepper-sprayed him. He was booked on a mayhem charge and held without bail since he is a parolee.

Man with realistic pellet gun shot and wounded by police at Colorado Walmart

Occurred May 6, 2014.
Scene of shooting at Lakewood Walmart (source)

Police responded to a domestic violence call at the Lakewood, Colorado Walmart store.  There, a man identified as Alex Martines, who had  a realistic-looking Airsoft pellet gun was threatening a woman, and then he pointed the gun at police.  He was shot with bean bag rounds, as well as real bullets, and wounded.  It was only afterward that police or the woman found out the gun was a pellet gun.

One officer thought the woman who was threatened was an employee of the store.

From an article and video:
Davis said around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, a woman involved in a domestic dispute with a man called police from a car parked on the east side of the Walmart located on the corner of Wadsworth Boulevard and West Colfax Avenue.
During her call for help, police say the woman told them the man in the car with her had a gun.
When police arrived, they used a loudspeaker to coax the man out of the vehicle. Davis said the man drew a weapon and pointed it at officers.
Two officers fired several shots from their service weapons, but the man would not let go of his weapon so officers then fired bean-bag rounds to knock the weapon out of the man's hands.
Witnesses told 9NEWS they heard a "volley of shots" - about 8 to 12 initially - and then several more shortly after.
Davis said the suspect was hit by the rounds officers fired but would not indicate how many times the suspect was hit by bullets from the officers' service weapons or the bean-bag rounds. Davis did say he believed the suspect's injuries are not life-threatening.
The woman who was in the car with the suspect was not injured and is being interviewed by police.
Neither the woman nor the police knew the man was armed with an air gun instead of real firearm.

There's no good reason to make realistic-looking pellet guns.  See THIS article for a quiz to see if you can tell them apart from the real guns.

12-year old younger brother of Walmart shoplifter threatens employee with realistic-looking pellet gun

Occurred on March 12, 2014.

A 19-year old man, Quaze Lanehart, was caught shoplifting electronic goods from a Walmart in Rochester Hills, Michigan. When confronted by store security, the man threatened them with scissors.  When they followed him out to the parking lot, Lanehart's 12-year old brother threatened the employees with a handgun.

The pair were arrested.  The gun turned out to be a realistic-looking Airsoft pellet gun.

From an article and news video:
Lanehart first was spotted in the Walmart's electronics department. He allegedly was loading up his cart with pricey TVs and notebooks. Instead of paying, he just pushed the cart outside.
"He went past all of the points to pay and was on his way out," said Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard.
Store security spotted him and brought him back inside for questioning. Police say that's when things got out of hand.
"He grabbed a pair of scissors and threatened to kill the store employees that were trying to detain him," said Bouchard.
Security followed Lanehart outside. Then, Walmart employees witnessed a real shocker. Lanehart's 12-year-old brother stepped out of a car pointing his airsoft gun at employees. The weapon looked like the real deal.
The boy allegedly told security to step back or they would be shot.
"Obviously that child is in a path with a very, very bad ending because of his relatives or whoever he is hanging around with. So hopefully this will be some intervention for the 12-year-old to get him on a different path," said Bouchard. "The 19-year-old has got a lot of serious charges."
Lanehart will be in court on Thursday facing felonious assault and theft charges. The 12-year-old boy was handed over to his parents. He likely will face some charges in juvenile court.
Lanehart was wanted on a domestic violence charge.

Shopper robbed at gunpoint at a Florida Walmart

Occurred February 7, 2014.
Suspect with stolen purse at Port St. Lucie Walmart (source)

(UPDATED - see below)

A shopper had just gotten into her car in the parking lot of a Walmart store in Port St. Lucie, Florida, when another driver pulled up behind her.  A woman got out, walked to her door, and pointed a gun at her.  The woman then fled to the other car with the victim's purse, and the suspects fled.

From an article and news video:
The victim told police she was sitting in her car when another woman approached her from the driver’s side window and pulled a black handgun. The armed woman demanded the victim’s purse and threatened to kill her.
The victim complied and the suspect then ran back to the getaway car and fled the scene, police said.
The investigation revealed that a black four-door car with an Illinois license plate (possible partial tag of CF253) pulled behind the victim’s car. The armed woman then got out of the passenger seat and approached the 67-year-old woman with a gun, police said.
She ran back to the car after stealing the purse and her accomplice drove away. The couple reportedly drove west on St. Lucie West Boulevard toward I-95.

UPDATE (2/18/14):  Two suspects have been arrested for the robbery. A realistic-looking Airsoft pistol (which Walmart sells) was likely used.  From an article, which includes pictures of the suspects:
Police say that on Feb. 7 Stephanie Aubrey McKinney, 27, put a gun to a 67-year-old woman's head in a Port St. Lucie Walmart parking lot, threatening to kill her if she didn't turn over her purse. McKinney then ran to a waiting car driven by James William Bozarth, 40.
Police first picked up the pair's trail after they began using the victim's debit card to withdraw cash. Surveillance video captured clear images of them both at a gas station, and the victim identified them as the people who robbed her.
Police learned that Bozarth reserved a room at the Travel Lodge on Blue Heron Boulevard in West Palm Beach, where the pair were later arrested. They confessed to the robbery and police found the victim's purse and bank cards in the car and in the couple's hotel room, along with a black Airsoft pistol.

Man with BB gun threatens Maryland Walmart worker

Occurred January 21, 2014.

A man entered a Walmart store in Laurel, Maryland, and attempted to return an electronic tablet.  When he was refused, because he didn't have a receipt, he became angry and pulled out what appeared to be a "machine gun" and threatened to shoot the worker.  When she screamed, he ran away.

He was soon caught and arrested.  The gun turned out to be a realistic-looking BB gun.

From an article:
A woman working at the customer service counter told police Iqbal approached the counter and attempted to return a used electronic tablet device, but his request was refused as he was unable to provide a receipt. He then took a pair of headphones off of his head and requested to return them as well. His request was again denied because he didn’t have a receipt.
That’s when things turned worse.
Police say Iqbal placed a backpack on the counter, took out a black sub-compact machine gun, later identified as the BB gun, and pointed it at the employee. He demanded that money be returned to him. When the Wal-Mart employee yelled, Iqbal fled through the front door without getting any money.
Patrol officers found him on the side of the Wal-Mart walking away from the store. He was taken into custody without incident and positively identified by Wal-Mart employees as the person who attempted the robbery.
The BB gun was recovered in the suspect’s backpack.

Man steals realistic BB gun from Louisiana Walmart, tries carjacking, robs store, and shot dead by police

Occurred December 28, 2013.

A 22-year old man, Joseph Glenn, stole a realistic-looking BB gun from a Walmart store in Ruston, Louisiana.  He then tried to use the gun to carjack or kidnap a woman in the Walmart parking lot.

Later, he used the gun in a robbery of a gas station.  When police showed up at his hotel room, Glenn brandished the gun and was shot by police.  He later died from his wounds.  It was only after this point that police realized the gun was a BB gun.

From an article:
Around midnight, Ruston Police responded to an armed robbery at a gas station on Louisiana Highway 33 in Ruston. Later, officers were called to an aggravated kidnapping at Walmart. A description of the subject, and evidence from both scenes, led police to identify Joseph Glenn, 22, of Grambling as the suspect in both crimes. ....
Surveillance footage from the Walmart in Ruston shows the suspect stealing the BB pistol from the store. According to sources close to the investigation, this was just before the suspect attempted to steal a car from the Walmart parking lot with a woman inside.
The suspect was identified as Joseph Glenn of Grambling, and was located early Sunday morning at the Hampton Inn in Ruston. That's where he drew his weapon, and was shot by Ruston Police officers.
Glenn was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Realistic-looking BB guns stolen by gang members from Mississippi Walmart

Occurred December 17, 2013.

Five boys, who may be gang members, entered a Walmart store in Holly Springs, Mississippi, and stole five realistic-looking BB guns.

According to police, such guns are often used by gangs in the area to commit crimes, since they cannot easily be distinguished from real guns.

From an article:
"These boys went into Walmart and they stole ... It was five of these stolen and they all got one," said Holly Springs Police Chief William Hollowell.
Hollowell is concerned about teens and gangs using BB guns to commit crimes.
"It looks like a gun, but it's not a real gun ... The people in the store think it's a real gun," said Hollowell.
The guns look so similar that most consumers cannot tell what is real and what is fake.
"We keep taking these guns from kids. If there's an incident where somebody is shot over these things that would just be a terrible thing to happen," said Hollowell.
Volunteer high school football Coach Danny Warren said many of the kids play with them for a joke.
"Some people don't take it as a joke. It'd more considered dangerous. Parents need to stop and talk to them," he said....
Hollowell said he does not want to see anymore young men die or lives ruined.
"If a police officer has to shoot someone that could very well bed his career," said Hollowell.
Chief Hollowell asked the local Walmart to put the BB guns in the same cases with the real guns they have in stock.

Sounds like a good idea, but here's a better one:  stop selling them.

There is no good reason for BB and pellet guns to look real, and they are routinely used to commit crimes, threaten, or injure, including at Walmart stores.

Security guard attacked by gunman in Indiana Walmart parking lot

December 19, 2013.

A 70-year old security guard, in uniform, was getting into his car in the parking lot of a Walmart store in Indianapolis, Indiana, during daytime, when he was attacked by a man wielding a gun.  The two fought each other.  The attacker then fled, but was later arrested.

Luckily, no one was injured.

According to the article, the gun may have been a realistic-looking BB gun.

From an article:
Doyle Robling has had some close calls in his life, but nothing like his run-in with a gunman Thursday afternoon. As he closed his car door leaving Walmart on US 31 South, someone suddenly pulled his car door open.
"He got down real low here and he yanked it open and had a gun and then we got in a scuffle," Robling said.
Even after explaining he had no cash, Robling feared getting shot. Despite the gun, he continued the scuffle with his attacker, just a few feet from Walmart's front door.
"Broad daylight, fifth parking spot from the main entrance to the grocery store," Robling said.
In the midst of the struggle, Robling's driver's side window got shattered and has since been repaired. He says eventually, the attacker jumped into a car and sped away.
But one eyewitness led police to 43-year-old Anthony Spencer, because she wrote down the license plate.
Robling says what surprised him is not only did it happen in broad daylight, but right in front of other shoppers.
"The one lady saw me put my stuff in the car and she was sitting there waiting to take my parking spot," he said.
Since Robling was attacked wearing his security guard uniform, he says that's reason enough to warn other shoppers not to let their guard down.

Elderly woman robbed at gunpoint in Wyoming Walmart parking lot

Occurred November 10, 2013.

(UPDATED -- See below)
Three suspects, including a 16-year old boy, robbed an elderly woman of her purse, at gunpoint, in the parking lot of a Walmart store in Riverton, Wyoming, in order to get "gas money."  The boy, Adrian Joseph Sixfeathers, was the robber with the gun.

A police chase ensued, and all three were arrested.

The gun turned out to be a realistic-looking pellet gun.

From an article:
In interviews with investigators, Underwood said she, Sixfeathers and Oldman had been involved in the robbery.
She said Sixfeathers had suggested the three suspects go to Walmart on Sunday afternoon so he could "grab a bag" from someone.
"Underwood knew that the purpose was to get gas money," Riverton Police Department Detective Scott Gardner said in his affidavit.
The trio drove to the store in a silver Chevy Monte Carlo, and Underwood said she parked the car in the lot.
She said Sixfeathers got out of the vehicle and ran back a short time later with a purse.
"(He) told her to 'go go go,'" Gardner said.
According to witnesses and video footage, the teen had drawn a gun on a 64-year-old Riverton woman on the northwest side of the parking lot, threatening to shoot her if she didn't give him her purse.
Gardner said the woman had been leaving the store with her purchased items when Sixfeathers approached her, "pulled a black handgun out and pulled the slide back."
The woman was not injured in the incident. ....
After acquiring the handbag, all three suspects reportedly left the area headed south on Federal Boulevard in the Monte Carlo. A witness called police and described the vehicle, which reportedly was missing its back window.
"The back window (was) broken out with dark plastic covering the window," Gardner wrote.
The caller also identified the suspect vehicle's license plate number.
Gardner said RPD officer Amy Luton tried to stop the car near the intersection of South Federal Boulevard and East Monroe Avenue, but Underwood failed to yield.
"(The Monte Carlo) increased speed and continued southbound towards the Wind River Indian Reservation," Gardner wrote.
Luton pursued the vehicle, which eventually stopped in the 1400 block of 17 Mile Road, about five miles west of Wyoming Highway 789.
Sixfeathers and Oldman reportedly ran from the car, headed southwest through a field. Gardner said officers engaged in a foot pursuit and eventually apprehended both subjects.
"Sixfeathers ... was observed throwing an object, later identified as a pellet gun," Gardner wrote. "The pellet gun had the appearance of a semi-automatic handgun."
The robbery victim later identified the weapon as the one Sixfeathers reportedly used in the Walmart parking lot.
Gardner said Underwood stayed in the Monte Carlo during the foot chase and surrendered to police. Officers said they found the 64-year-old woman's purse in the vehicle.

UPDATE (12/20/13):  The teen robber, Sixfeathers, is being charged as an adult:
The 16-year-old who allegedly robbed a woman in the Walmart parking lot using a pellet gun on Nov. 10 is being charged as an adult and could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted. ....
According to court documents, the victim told police that after purchasing item in the store and walking to her vehicle when a male subject approached.
“She stated that the suspect pulled a black handgun out and pulled the slide back,” states the affidavit. “The suspect then pointed the gun to her head and said ‘I’m going to shoot you if you don’t give me your purse.’ She then gave the suspect her purse.”
The court documents state the woman was able to give a description of the get-away vehicle used, and RPD Officer Amy Luton observed it traveling southbound on Federal Boulevard shortly after the 911 call. The vehicle failed to stop for the officer, and a pursuit continued onto the Wind River Indian Reservation until the suspect vehicle stopped on the 1400 block of 17 Mile Road.
Two men, later identified as Oldman and Sixfeathers allegedly fled the vehicle. Sixfeathers was observed throwing a pellet gun, which resembled a semi-automatic handgun. Both men were detained, and the victim identified the gun thrown as the one used in the robbery.
Underwood reportedly remained in the driver’s seat after the vehicle stopped.
“Underwood admitted during question that she, Adrian Joseph Sixfeathers and Curtis Oldman were involved in the robbery at Wal-Mart,” states the affidavit. “She advised that prior to the robbery she, Sixfeathers, and Oldman were attempting to sell I-pods at the ‘Game Stop’ in Riverton. At that time, Sixfeathers, suggested that they go to Wal-Mart and he would ‘grab a bag’ from someone. Underwood knew that the purpose was to get gas money. She stated that the three went to Wal-Mart and then she parked the car. Sixfeathers got out of the vehicle and ran back a short time later with a purse and told her to ‘go, go, go.’”
The affidavit also states that the victim’s purse was found in the vehicle driven by Underwood, and that the victim positively identified Sixfeathers as the one who robbed her.

Woman threatens employees with BB gun at Missouri Walmart

Occurred November 3, 2013.

A woman was caught shoplifting at a Walmart store in Joplin, Missouri.  When store security confronted her just after leaving the store, she pulled out a handgun and threatened the security officer with it.  She dropped the gun when police arrived, and was arrested.

Three Texas teens found with stolen realistic pellet guns, drugs, and stolen car at Walmart in New Mexico

Occurred July 23, 2013.

Three teen boys from Texas, ages 16, 17, and 18, were on the run with a stolen car and wound up being captured in the parking lot of a Walmart in Carlsbad, New Mexico.  In the car with them were three realistic-looking pellet guns and drugs.  At least one of the guns had been reported stolen  from a Walmart store.

From an article:
Baca checked the license plate and VIN number on the vehicle and discovered the truck had been stolen out of Seminole, Texas, where the two juveniles, Javier Mares and Curtis Kelly, were from. Officer Norman Bowie found several homemade marijuana pipes, loose marijuana, three black pellet handguns and bottles of Crown Royal and Malibu Red inside the vehicle, according to the police report.
The report states officers caught the driver of the Toyota Tundra, later identified as Edgar Madrid, 18, of Hobbs, attempting to break into another vehicle south of Walmart.
Baca said an officer saw a gun on the ground in front of the Dumpster where Madrid was hiding and asked Madrid to raise his hands. Madrid then started to reach down to his waistband, most of his body still behind the Dumpster, Baca said. Officers reportedly did not know the gun was fake and had been stolen from Walmart until Madrid was placed in custody.

Man steals realistic pellet guns from Illinois Walmart and uses one to hold off police

Occurred July 23, 2013.

Store employees at a Walmart store in Wood River, Illinois, witnessed 20-year old Nicholas S. Middleton opening several realistic-looking Airsoft pellet guns and shoplifting them.

When police arrived, Middleton put one of the guns to his head.  Police held back, and Middleton fled.  Eventually police stopped Middleton, who continued to threaten to harm himself with the gun, until police found an opportunity and captured him.

From an article:
Steward said the man ran from store security after they allegedly witnessed him ripping open several Airsoft pellet gun packages. An Airsoft gun typically is designed to shoot plastic pellets with a compressed gas cartridge. They are non-lethal in nature but designed to look like a real weapon, Steward said.
When police finally took the man into custody, he had “four or five” of the guns in his possession, the chief said.
The suspect ran to his vehicle, a 1999 Ford Contour, in the store parking lot at 610 Wesley Drive, just as officers were converging. Immediately, he began pointing one of the guns at his head while outside his car, Steward said.
The situation kept officers at a distance, allowing the man to get in the car and drive away. He hit numerous curbs with his tires on the way out of the lot.
He fled north on Wesley Drive and got as far as Old Oak Road in Rosewood Heights before a front wheel came off his car. By that point, three of four tires were flattened from various impacts, Steward said.
Officers from Wood River, Bethalto, South Roxana, Roxana and Madison County were involved in the pursuit and surrounded his car, their own guns drawn, Steward said. The man continued to hold the gun to his head.
“At some point, he got angry and banged the gun on the side of the car, and it fell into the street,” the chief said. “That’s when they were able to take him into custody.”
