Ohio man threatens Walmart shoppers with realistic-looking pellet rifle and is shot to death by police

Occurred August 5, 2014.
Scene of shooting at Beavercreek Walmart (source)

(UPDATED -- See below)

22-year old John Crawford was seen loading a rifle in a Walmart store in Beavercreek, Ohio, near Dayton, then threatening customers, including children, with it.  Police responded and shot him to death when he wouldn't drop the weapon.

During the evacuation, a 37-year old woman, Angela Williams, also collapsed and died, apparently due to unrelated health issues, while trying to evacuate herself and her two children.

From an article:
Authorities say a customer also died after suffering a medical problem during the evacuation of the store Tuesday. Police identified her as Angela Williams, 37, of Fairborn.
Police identified the man shot Tuesday night at a Wal-Mart in the Dayton suburb of Beavercreek as 22-year-old John Crawford of Cincinnati. He died at a hospital.
It's unclear why he had the weapon in the store. A statement from police didn't address Crawford's motives or provide further details about him. No phone was listed for Crawford at the address police had for him.
Beavercreek police said initial investigations indicate the officers responded appropriately. State investigators will review the shooting.
A man who witnessed the scene told a 911 dispatcher that a man with a rifle was near the pet supplies section and appeared to be loading the firearm.
"There is a gentleman walking around with a gun in the store. ... He's, like, pointing it at people," the witness said. Later in the call, sounds like gunshots can be heard, followed by someone screaming for people to leave.
Wal-Mart spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said by email Wednesday that the company is working with investigators and is "deeply saddened about the loss of life."

Walmart is "deeply saddened," but not enough to actually change any of their gun sales or gun carrying policies.

It turns out the rifle was a realistic-looking pellet gun, which Crawford stole and loaded while inside the store.  From another article:
A law enforcement source tells the Dayton Daily News and News Center 7 that the gun used in the Walmart shooting was a realistic-looking toy gun. ....
[Customer] Ronald Ritche said the man "was just waving it at children and people. Items.... I couldn't hear anything that he was saying. I'm thinking that he is either going to rob the place or he's there to shoot somebody else." The man looked kind of serious, Ronald Ritchie said. "He didn't really want to be looked at and when people did look at him, he was pointing the gun at them. He was pointing at people. Children walking by."
HERE is more information on the gun in question.  HERE is Walmart's online sales page for the black version (it also comes in tan).

In two years, I've chronicled at least 23 incidents involving realistic-looking pellet guns used in crimes and shootings at Walmart stores.  How many does it take for Walmart to stop selling these dangerous items?

Pellet guns are not toys, and there is no good reason for them to look like the real thing!

UPDATE (8/9/14):  The woman who collapsed while trying to get her children to safety, Angela Williams, was shopping for school supplies and for her upcoming wedding that weekend.

UPDATE (8/9/14):  More information on the realistic-looking pellet gun that the suspect was using to threaten people and that got him shot to death, from an article:

a “variable pump air rifle” made by Crosman Corp.
The owner’s manual for the MK-177 BB/Pellet rifle warns that misuse can result in serious injury or death. And it specifically warns about waving it in public. “Police and others may think it is a firearm,” the manual states.
There was no immediate response to an email seeking comment sent Thursday to the Rochester, New York-based manufacturer.

The MK-177 (.177 caliber) BB/Pellet Rifle, manufactured by Crosman
And, no, it's not a "toy."  These realistic-looking guns are very regularly used by adults and kids to rob, intimidate, threaten, injure, and even kill.

UPDATE (8/9/14):  Despite at least 25 incidents of crimes committed at Walmart stores in just the last couple years using realistic-looking pellet guns, Walmart refuses to stop selling them.

A similar-looking Bushmaster ACR assault rifle
UPDATE (8/9/14):  The suspect's girlfriend spoke out about the suspect.  They had two small children together, ages 1 and 4.  According to her, the suspect did not enter the store with the gun.

UPDATE (8/10/14):  A pro-gun, anti-cop group is protesting outside the Walmart store where this occurred.  But instead of protesting the fact that Walmart sells pellet guns that are so realistic that even police can't tell them apart, they are protesting the police for shooting the suspect!

UPDATE (8/10/14):  Listen to example 9-1-1 calls, HERE.

ADDENDUM (8/13/14):  HERE is the SCAR rifle and HERE is a Bushmaster ACR assault rifle, both of which the MK-177 pellet rifle is made to look like.  Compare the two pictures, above.  If someone pointed one of these at you from a short distance, do you think you could tell the difference?

Ohio teen fires shots in Walmart parking lot after car crash

Occurred May 17, 2014.

Two cars collided in a Walmart parking lot in Sandusky, Ohio.  A confrontation occurred after this, during which a 17-year old boy who was involved pulled out a .32-caliber handgun and fired three shots into the air, then he fled.

Police responded, and the boy was taken into custody.  He then led police to where he hid the gun.

Luckily, no one was injured.

From an article:
The gray car was trolling through the Walmart parking lot when it was struck by the white car. The occupants got out and began arguing, and a few other vehicles pulled up to the scene, too.
At some point, the Willoughby boy pulled out a .32-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver and fired into the air, the report said. The boy then fled on foot toward the Firelands medical building and the Super 8. The gray car then left the crash scene, but not before picking up the alleged shooter on Milan Road.
The boy’s appearance and clothing matched the description provided by witnesses. Police also viewed surveillance video from Walmart, which showed the boy firing the gun into the air before running off.
The three people who were in the vehicle with the boy said they had no idea who fired the shots. They were not charged, according to the report.
Police scoured the scene in hopes of finding the gun, but it was the boy who led them to it — he tossed the weapon into some bushes near the Super 8 when he ran from the scene, the report said.
The gun had three live rounds and three spent rounds, the report said. The boy was taken to the Erie County detention center.
The article didn't say where the boy got the gun and ammo.  Every gun in the hands of a child must first pass through the hands of an adult.

Shoplifters fire at police officer at Ohio Walmart

Occurred December 15, 2013.

A group of people were reported shoplifting carts full of goods from an Alliance, Ohio, Walmart store.  When police arrived, one of the suspects fired a handgun at the officer.  Luckily no one was injured.

From an article:
A call was received by Alliance police at approximately 10 p.m. and when police responded they took a report from the manager of Walmart, who said he was tipped off about the operation and he had followed the suspects to a car waiting for them. He further stated he was shot at by the individuals as they were flinging the goods into the car and rushing to take off. Some of the items left behind in their haste included washcloths, men's cologne, boots, slippers, a blow-up mattress, sweatshirts, leather belts, women's lotions, men's underwear, and even a package of Christmas gift boxes to wrap the presents in.
Sgt. David Bair, who is in charge of the investigation, indicated thieves often put a lot of different types of things into their carts to appear inconspicuous. If they walk right up to the electronics section and load a TV or computer into their cart, they could be watched more closely, he said.
Regarding the possible gunshots, Bair said the manager reported the gunfire wasn't very loud, so it is thought by police it could have been a pellet gun, or even a noise made by the car. As of 4:45 p.m. Monday, the investigation was continuing, but no evidence was yet found to support the testimony of the manager related to the shots being fired.
"We've got officers there now gathering and reviewing surveillance videos from Walmart," said Bair, "and we're hoping to identify someone that was involved."

Shooter tracked to Ohio Walmart and shot to death by SWAT

Occurred November 22, 2013.
Scene of fatal shooting at Columbus Walmart (source)

47-year old Danny Thornton knocked on a door at a home in Grove City, Ohio, and then shot a 9-year old boy, Jaiden Dixon, in the face.  Jaiden had been preparing to leave for school in the morning when he opened the door.  Two other boys, ages 17 and 18, were at the home as well.

Thornton then went to a dental office, where he shot his ex-girlfriend.

A SWAT team caught up to Thornton at the Columbus, Ohio, Walmart and a shootout occurred.  When the bullets stopped flying, Thornton was dead, and a SWAT team member was injured.

The boy, Jaiden, is on life support until his organs can be donated, according to his family.

The ex-girlfriend is now in critical condition.

Thornton's motive for the shootings, or why he fled to Walmart, have not been released.

From an article, which has pictures of Thornton and 9-year old Jaiden:
Around 9:45 a.m., he was tracked to a location near Morse and Stelzer Roads at a Walmart across from Easton Town Center.
As police moved in, they say Thornton fired.
"Once they moved in, the suspect exited his car, with a handgun in his hand; raised it towards the officers and that's when the shots were fired," said Sgt. Rich Weiner, CPD. "We don't have to wait for the suspect to fire. If he raises that weapon in a threatening manner, the officers can go ahead and use deadly force."
Thornton was killed in the exchange.
A SWAT officer was shot in the abdomen and hip area during the exchange of gunfire.
Police said Officer Steve Smith was the man injured in the shootout with Thornton. Officials say the 24 year veteran of the force is being kept for observation and is in good spirits. Two other SWAT officers were also involved in the shooting but not injured.
Jaiden Dixon is in critical condition at Nationwide Children's Hospital. His mother and brother were at the home but not injured in the shooting. His mother has posted on Facebook that the family that Jaiden is being kept on life support to donate his organs.
From another article, identifying the female victim and stating that the Walmart store remained open after the incident:

After shooting the boy, investigators believe Thornton traveled to Mark A. Pitts D.D.S. at 4409 Crossroads Center, where he shot employee Vicki Vertin in the office's lobby. Vertin was taken to Grant Medical Center in critical condition.
A relative of Vertin told ABC 6/FOX 28 the victim was the mother of one of Thornton's children.
Several Columbus and Grove City schools were locked down as police searched for Thornton, 47, who was traveling in a Toyota Camry. That car was eventually spotted in the Walmart parking lot, at which time SWAT officers were sent to the area.
Police have not released specific details about the shootout, which occurred at approximately 11 a.m.
Customers were allowed to enter and exit Walmart after Thornton was declared dead, but drivers were prohibited from removing their cars from the parking lot until police completed their examination at approximately 2 p.m.
Police have not released a possible motive for the alleged shooting spree. Thornton's criminal record includes a 1985 charge of felonious assault, and a 1992 indictment for carrying a concealed weapon. He spent four days in jail in 2007 after failing to appear in court.

UPDATE (7/25/14):   9-year old victim, Jaiden Dixon, has his organs donated.  A little girl in St. Louis received his lungs and is alive today because of him.  Read about it HERE.

Two people dead from murder/suicide in Ohio Walmart parking lot

Occurred September 8, 2013.

After gunshots were reported, two people were found dead in a car in the parking lot of a Walmart in Salem, Ohio.

From an article:
According to the Salem Police Department Facebook page, two people were found dead in the Walmart parking lot. At Approximately 2:40 a.m. Salem police received a 911 call of reported shots fired at the Walmart, 2875 E. State St. Upon arrival, officers located a deceased female and male in the southeast parking lot of the store. A Ruger 9mm semi-automatic handgun was also located near the male. Several witnesses have been interviewed and store security video is being analyzed.
According to another article, it was a murder/suicide, where the shooter killed his former girlfriend and then himself.

The female victim, Sylvia Maillis, 37, was an overnight support manager at the Walmart.  Her ex-boyfriend who did the shooting, Charles Kropinak, 36, had a conceal carry license.  From another article:

[Maillis and friends] returned to the employee parking lot next to the market side of the store and were inside her car when her ex-boyfriend, 36-year-old Charles Kropinak, of Campbell, pulled up a couple of spaces down and exited his vehicle.
She exited her vehicle and the two argued, then Kropinak pulled out a 9mm Ruger semi-automatic handgun and shot Maillis multiple times before shooting himself.
They were both dead at the scene, with the handgun found near Kropinak. Police received the first 911 call at 2:40 a.m. from a caller at Walmart who said somebody had been shot.
...
She had a 9-year-old daughter and had worked for Walmart since 2005. According to Davis, she had a Canfield address but lived on Washingtonville Road.
He couldn't confirm whether she had a protection order against Kropinak or not, saying he couldn't find a record of one and if she had one previously, it must have expired. He confirmed that Kropinak did hold a conceal carry permit. A protection order prohibits the person the order is against from having a firearm.

Occurred March 7, 2012.

Two men were suspected of shoplifting at a Columbus, Ohio Walmart and were in a getaway car driven by a woman.  Officers attempted to stop them, then the woman rammed her car into the police cruiser and ran over the foot of one of the officers. The officer opened fire, wounding the woman in the leg.  She continued to drive off, but was caught when stuck in traffic.

From an article:
The Columbus officer who shot and wounded a woman in the parking lot of a West Side Walmart yesterday afternoon is a recent police-academy graduate receiving on-street training.

Stephanie Stegmeier was shot in the leg but kept driving.
She didn’t get far before getting stuck in heavy traffic, police said. Her car was blocked in by police about a mile west on Georgesville Road near Holt Road.
