Marijuana heist in Washington Walmart parking lot turns into defensive shooting

Occurred October 1, 2014.

A man met with two other men in the parking lot of a Walmart store on the Tulalip Indian Reservation near Marysville, Washington, to sell medical marijuana, as he had arranged via Craigslist.  That's when one of the other men pulled out a gun to try to rob the seller, hit him in the face with the gun, and shot out a window.  The seller then pulled out his own gun and fired, hitting one of the attackers, wounding him in the shoulder.

The shooter later reported the shooting to the police.  The suspects were captured, including the wounded one at a hospital.

From an article:
[The seller] said the men hit him in the face with a handgun and shot out his front passenger-side window. He fired back with his own gun, and said his actions were self-defense, according to court records. ...

The Tulalip man told detectives that he sells medical marijuana and had taken out an ad on Craigs-list. He agreed to meet with the men Wednesday night.

After the shooting, the Tulalip man drove home to tell his wife what happened. They then went to the Washington State Patrol headquarters west of Marysville to report the shooting. The case was turned over to Tulalip Tribal Police who asked for assistance from the sheriff's office Major Crimes Unit.

At the hospital, the injured suspect told detectives he was shot at a party in Everett. When asked if he had been in the Tulalip supermarket parking lot earlier that evening, he allegedly became uncooperative.

Man shot and killed at Florida Walmart parking lot

Occurred July 9, 2014.

(UPDATED -- See below)
Two men got into an argument in the parking lot of a Walmart store in Silver Springs Shores, Florida.  One man pulled out a gun and shot to death the other man, Thomas James Brown, then fled the scene.  Police caught up with the shooter, but have not yet charged him.

From an article:
Thomas James Brown died in the shooting, which occurred just after 11 p.m. at 34 Bahia Avenue in Silver Springs Shores, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies said a 911 caller reported the shooting, and Brown was found dead at the scene.
Brown had been arguing with another man, who shot Brown several times, according to deputies.  The suspected shooter fled in a sport utility vehicle but was later located near Ocklawaha, deputies said.
The man was detained for questioning, but no charges have been filed, deputies said.
The victim and shooter knew each other and had been friends for a while.  According to another article:

The family said Brown had a job cutting lawns and that he knew the man who shot him. The shooter, they said, had visited their home. They said he and Brown had been friends for a while.
They said Brown would loan his friend cash because the shooter was not working. Family members said they suspect that Brown kept asking him for his money and the two got into an argument.
“He would give him money to help him out,” Brown's mother said.
Family members said Brown and others would gather in the Walmart parking lot to show off their vehicles.
Patrick Brown said his brother "liked driving his truck and dirt bike, hanging with his friends, and loved his family. … He was just a simple guy."

UPDATE (8/2/14):  Even though he had fled the scene of the shooting, the shooter, Colt Thriemer, evoked Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law and successfully argued that he shot Brown in self-defense, a claim that is refuted by Brown's family.  From another article:
Thomas James Brown, 21, was walking away toward his car when Thriemer fired ten shots. Some say Brown had threatened to kill Thriemer over the course of several weeks. The story as told by prosecutors in a detailed legal memo suggests drug transactions, addiction, and monetary debts all played a role in the scenario leading up to Brown’s death.
But these facts will never play out in a trial, because prosecutors have decided not to charge Thriemer citing Florida’s Stand Your Ground law.
“The Stand Your Ground statute makes no exception from the immunity because Brown may have been walking away from Thriemer at the time the deadly force was used,” the memo from the State Attorney’s office states. “The Stand Your Ground law does not require Thriemer to wait until Brown in fact retrieved a gun before he fired.

(UPDATED -- See below)

Two men got into an argument at the service counter of a Walmart store in Chandler, Arizona.  One of the men, Kyle Wayne Quadlin, 25, pulled out a gun and shot the other, Kriston Charles Belinte Chee, 36.  Quadlin soon fled the scene.

Chee later died at the hospital.

Police caught up to Quadlin at his home.  Quadlin claimed self-defense.

From an article:
Detectives reviewing surveillance video report that two people -- Kyle Wayne Quadlin, 25, and Kriston Charles Belinte Chee, 36 -- got into a fight in the store, which ended in a shooting around 4 p.m. Sunday, Chandler police spokesman Joseph Favazzo said in a news release.
"It appears the two did not know one another," Favazzo said in an email to media outlets Monday morning. "The initial dispute broke out at the service counter."
According to police, Quadlin was losing the fight. Favazzo said he told officers he "was in fear for his life" when he pulled a gun and allegedly shot Belinte Chee.

Quadlin remained at the store for a little while and then fled. He didn't make any other threats, according to Favazzo.

Soon afterward, a family member called authorities to report his whereabouts. Police picked up Quadlin at the home and were questioning him. He was not under arrest as of Monday morning and was cooperating with authorities, Favazzo said.

Belinte Chee was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, but later died.
According to another article, the shooter never called police, but rather a family member reported him to the police, who then responded to the shooter's home to question him.

(UPDATED -- See below)

A man attempted to rob a Brinks armored truck security guard in front of a Walmart store in Indianapolis, Indiana.  But the security guard pulled his gun and shot the suspect.

The suspect, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, was injured.

From an article:
The robber, who has not been identified, was shot several times and was injured but was wearing a bullet-proof vest, police said. He was in serious condition. The guard was not seriously hurt.
The shooting happened outside a Walmart at 7245 S. U.S. 31, at about 4:30 p.m., when the guard was hauling a bag of cash from the store to his armored truck, said Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Officer Christopher Wilburn.
The suspect approached the guard near the truck, shot pepper spray into his eyes and tried to grab the bag of cash. But the guard struggled with the man, managed to pull out his gun and shot the suspect, Wilburn said.
Dozens of people saw the daylight robbery attempt After the robber was shot he tried to run away and was tackled by a citizen and an off-duty officer, Wilburn said.

UPDATE (12/26/13):  According to another article, an armed bystander with a .22-caliber handgun chased the suspect after the initial shooting, and even tried to shoot the suspect, failed, then tackled the suspect and held him at gunpoint.  From the article:
A 37-year-old Indianapolis father with a .22-caliber handgun chased down the already-wounded suspect, slammed him to the ground and stuck a gun to his head until police arrived.
"Don't resist or move unless you want your brains splattered all over the pavement," the citizen, whose name is Jeff, told the suspect. ....
Jeff told The Star that he not only tackled Jackson but tried to shoot him seconds before. Jeff chased Jackson until he was five to 10 yards behind him. Jeff stopped, raised the .22 and squeezed the trigger.
The gun didn't fire. The safety was on.
"He most likely would have been dead," Jeff said. "But I'm glad no one was hurt."
Law enforcement officials and policing experts said that although Jeff helped apprehend a suspect in a violent crime, he put the public in danger.
"If you pull a weapon in a crowded place you need to be highly trained in how to use it," said Jim White, a former Indiana state police officer who is a senior lecturer at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis' School of Public and Environmental Affairs.
"There are just so many things that can wrong. Police and soldiers go through thousands of hours of training for this, and it is still the riskiest thing they will encounter on the job."
