Man robbed at gunpoint for game system in Oklahoma Walmart parking lot; shot fired

Occurred October 22, 2014.

A man arranged to meet a couple in the parking lot of an Oklahoma City Walmart in order to sell a game system, as arranged on Craigslist.  But the man in the couple pulled an assault weapon and woman robbed the victim of his game system, instead.

The two men fought, and the gun dropped, firing a round.

The couple made off with the game system and gun, and the victim fled to his car where his child was waiting.

A man told police he was robbed in a Walmart parking lot when he tried to sell a Playstation 4 game console in a Craigslist transaction.
About 12:50 p.m. Wednesday, police were sent to 6100 W Reno Ave. in reference to a reported armed robbery.
Jessie Wiley told police he was in the parking lot to meet with a man and a woman to sell them a Playstation 4.
As Wiley was taking the Playstation out of his vehicle, the man approached him with a gun described as a black Tec 9 or Uzi, the police report states.
Wiley told police the man told him to put the Playstation 4 in the trunk of his car, but Wiley refused.
The man ran up to Wiley and struck him on the back of his head, the police report states.
Wiley started wrestling with the man, the police report states.
He said the man dropped the gun, and it fired one round.
Wiley was not sure what direction the firearm was facing when the round went off, according to the police report.
Wiley said he started punching the man in the face.
The woman grabbed the Playstation 4 and loaded it in the trunk of her vehicle, Wiley told police.
She picked up the gun, and Wiley said he started gouging the man’s left eye with his thumb.
Wiley released the man and returned to his vehicle because he had a small child with him, the report states.

Man tries to rob Oklahoma Walmart, fails, then commits suicide when police confront him

Occurred June 19, 2014.

A man named Peter Cangemi III walked up to a cash register in a Walmart store in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and demanded cash with a gun.  When the clerk couldn't comply, the man fled.  Police chased after him, catching up to him in the bed of a truck where he had hitchhiked a ride.  The man then committed suicide with the gun, shooting himself in the head.

From an article:
Store employees told police the suspect had a gun and demanded money from the Customer Service desk. Employees couldn’t get the drawer open, so the man left without incident.
Police say witnesses saw the suspect leave on a motorcycle, which was later found abandoned in a wooded area about a mile north of the store.
Police soon after stopped a pick-up truck in the area. The driver and passenger followed orders given by the patrol officer, but a man in the bed of the truck stood up with a gun to his head, fired the gun and died at the scene.
The officer did not fire any shots.
The robbery suspect ended up in the truck after he asked the two for a ride.

(UPDATED -- See below)

Eric Santeliz, 20, met two other men in a car in the parking lot of a Walmart store in Tulsa, Oklahoma, for a drug deal.  He intended, instead, to rob the men.

But the other men pulled out a gun and shot Santeliz, wounding him.  Santeliz returned fire, killing one of the men and injuring another.

Police responded and took the survivors to the hospital, taking Santeliz into custody.

From an article:
One suspect was arrested at approximately 4:15 a.m. Tuesday morning. Eric Santeliz, 20, reportedly told officers that he had arranged the narcotics transaction knowing that he did not have enough money to complete the transaction.
Santeliz said he planned to rob the victim. When the subjects were in the vehicle about to make the drug transaction, the victim and another person inside the vehicle reportedly pulled out a gun. The victim shot Santeliz and as he exited the vehicle, and then the victim was shot and killed, the police report states.
Tulsa police detectives say the gun shots were exchanged inside a dark colored Nissan Altima.
Responding officers evacuated the store after reports that the shooter may have gone inside. The store was shut down until investigators were able to clear the scene. One shopper told KTUL that there was no loud P-A system announcement.
Two handguns were found in the parking lot near several cars.
The victim died after being shot in the head and taken to St. John's hospital. The other shooting victims were taken to Saint Francis Hospital after one was shot in the leg and the other was shot in the arm.
This is the 20th homicide of the year in Tulsa.
Tulsa Walmarts have seen other gun crimes since 2012, including a robbery in May, 2013, and a drunk shooting up the parking lot in July, 2012.

UPDATE (7/13/14):   More details have been released.  According to an article:
According to radio traffic, store officials were following 26-year-old Cordell Lee Tebe of Konawa when he left the beer in the store and walked out. An Ada police detective was at the store and heard the call go out over the radio. The detective joined store loss prevention officers while they attempted to arrest Tebe for the Thursday theft.

Tebe ran away toward a pickup with three alleged accomplices waiting inside. Police said Tebe jumped in the passenger side of the pickup and told the driver to take off. When she refused, Tebe pushed her out of the pickup and took control of the vehicle.

The detective and an off-duty Roff reserve officer drew their handguns on Tebe and ordered him to stop. When Tebe backed the pickup toward the officers, they opened fire in an attempt to disable the vehicle.

Police hit and flattened one of the tires, but Tebe drove away. No one was injured in the incident. The detective and other police pursued Tebe down Country Club Road, then down A Street before he stopped the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.

Officers tackled him to the ground and arrested him. Two other people in the pickup, and the woman who was pushed out in the parking lot, were also arrested. Police did not release the identities of the three other suspects or the names of the officers involved by press time Saturday. Several stolen items were found inside the pickup, police said.

Man fires at vehicle in Oklahoma Walmart parking lot

Occurred February 6, 2014.

Police responded to a shooting at a Walmart store in Mustang, Oklahoma. Justin Smallwood, 29, of Oklahoma City, fired at an occupied vehicle in the parking lot, using a shotgun.  A police chase ensued, and when he was captured, he was wearing a bulletproof vest and, in addition to the shotgun, had two handguns, including one with a high-capacity ammo magazine.

Luckily, no one was injured.

From an article with a pic of the suspect:
"We had a subject that fired a weapon in the Walmart parking lot," Foley said. "He struck a vehicle that had three occupants in it. No one was hurt or injured."
Foley said a Mustang police officer found the vehicle that matched the description, a silver Dodge Charger, and attempted to stop the vehicle.
"The subject would not stop and a pursuit started," Foley said. "The pursuit went into Oklahoma City and ended at Interstate 40 and Council Road. He was taken into custody without incident."
Justin Smallwood, 29, of Oklahoma City was taken into custody and booked into the Mustang city jail.
"Something significant with this arrest is the firearms and ammunition he had with him," Foley said.
Foley said Smallwood used a 12 gauge shotgun at Walmart.
"When he was arrested, he was wearing a bullet proof vest loaded with extra magazines for both the rifle and handguns," he said. "There were two handguns laying on the passenger seat of the vehicle, one being a Glock firearm with an extra high-capacity magazine in it and the other being a .45 caliber 1911 style colt with another high-capacity magazine."
Foley said he did not know what Smallwood's intent was at Walmart.
The suspect was heavily armed, including with an assault rifle.

Police officer shoots and kills child abductor in Oklahoma Walmart

Scene of shooting at Midwest City Walmart Neighborhood Market
Occurred June 17, 2013.

(UPDATED: see below)

Sammie Lamont Wallace, 37, entered a Midwest City, Oklahoma, Walmart Neighborhood Market store, and then abducted a 2-year old girl from a shopping cart, where she had been shopping with her mother.  He then put a knife to the toddler and went to the back of the store, counting down.

Police responded, and when it was clear that the man wasn't backing down and was likely to harm the child, shot him and killed him.

Wallace had a long rap sheet of violent acts, including a shooting, armed robbery, and threats to kill others.

From an article:

A child, 2, was plucked from her shopping cart and held hostage at knife point. The man who took the little girl was identified by police as Sammie Lamont Wallace, 37. Officers said Wallace threatened the child's life and began a countdown in the back of the store. Shoppers and employees were evacuated as police began to negotiate with Wallace, who made unintelligible demands.
Police officers who responded to the incident just after 3 p.m. first started to negotiate with the hostage-taker in the dairy section of the store, 7520 E Reno Ave. Attempts to talk ended as Wallace began to count and held a knife to the child's body. A Midwest City police officer shot Wallace dead.
The grocery store reopened Tuesday morning. Twenty-four hours after the incident, there were more questions than answers.
Midwest City Assistant Police Chief Sid Porter said it's not clear why Wallace targeted a child that he did not know.
Police have not released the name of the child, her mother, or of the officer who shot Wallace. The child was uninjured, Porter said.

The district attorney and prosecutor says that the officer's actions were heroic and justified, so likely the shooting is ruled as justified.

UPDATE (7/3/13):  The mother of the girl who was held hostage spoke out about the incident:
"I was literally begging for my daughter's life," Alice Keating told NBC of the terrifying abduction while shopping at a Midwest City store with her two girls, aged 2 and 12, late last month.
When she turned her back on her children for a second, police say, wanted felon Sammie Wallace snatched her youngest Zoey from her shopping cart and casually began making his escape.
When Keating realized what was happening and turned to face the man she says he flashed a knife held up to her little girl.
"He said really quietly, 'Hey little mama, you see this knife?'" Keating recalled.
"I did not maintain my composure. I was completely freaked out," she said. "I wanted to reach out and grab her but he had a knife. There was nothing I could do but stand there and beg for her life."

An "obviously mentally ill" schizo man purchases rifles from Oklahoma Walmart and kills mother with them

Gerald Hume, schiozphrenic shooter and Walmart gun shopper
Back in November, 2012, a known schizophrenic man who hears voices and, according to the police, is "obviously mentally ill" was nonetheless able to purchase rifles from a Walmart in Moore, Oklahoma, and a handgun from another store, and then shot his mother.  He then dismembered her.

With an angelic face like that, who could possibly refuse a gun sale?

After an 11-hour standoff with police, he was arrested.  Police then removed numerous weapons from the home and found his mother's body parts, and a dead cat, in the freezer.

From the article:
Gerald Hume was taken into custody Nov. 14 after an 11-hour standoff with police at his mother's home in southeast Oklahoma City. Before that, police had been to the residence numerous times looking for Janet Kay Hume, the defendant's mother.
Gerald Hume was described by a relative as “a known schizophrenic” who hears voices and requires treatment, police Detective David Jacobson reported in an affidavit for a search warrant.
Janet Hume, who was 77, had been reported missing by relatives in the days leading up to the standoff.
During the standoff, Gerald Hume admitted to a police negotiator that he had shot his mother in the chest, police Detective Ryan Porter reported in a court affidavit filed with the charge.
Police removed numerous guns, rifles and ammunition from the home he shared his mother. Janet Hume's body was found in a bedroom after a tactical team entered the residence.
Police also found a dead house cat and unspecified body parts that belonged to Janet Hume inside a freezer.
Despite being "obviously" mentally ill, he was still able to purchase his weapon from Walmart, in part because Oklahoma does not report mentally ill people to the NICS gun purchase background system.

Oklahoma City Police Capt. Dexter Nelson said the fact that Hume, 52, was able to get the guns — despite being “visibly” mentally ill — is a scary reality in Oklahoma and a majority of the states in the nation.
Nelson said officers who've dealt with Hume described him as being “obviously” mentally ill.
“From the officers who responded to the house, they said, ‘The man's visibly unstable.' … That's what they described him as,” he said Thursday. “Look at that picture on TV, or whatever. Does this man look like he should have a gun?”
Nelson said Hume bought rifles Sept. 25 at the Walmart in Moore. He said Hume bought a Glock handgun the next day at Gun World.
In Oklahoma, mental health records are not routinely sent to the federal database used to screen potential gun buyers, Nelson said. Most other states fall into the same category.
“He lied on the application like everybody else does,” Nelson said. “With the state not reporting to that network, they're not going to find anything, even if he had been involuntarily committed. Because we're one of the states that doesn't normally report.”
A report released in late 2011 by the group Mayors Against Illegal Guns found that Oklahoma had sent just two mental health records to the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System, which is commonly referred to as NICS.
Most of the states in U.S. have reported fewer than 1,000 records. A handful of states, including Texas and California, are responsible for the bulk of the mental health records that have been shared since NICS was launched in the 1990s.
“You can be just as crazy as the day is long, but if police haven't made contact with you to commit you … you're not going to be in that system,” Nelson said. “There's a lot of people out there taking medication that won't show up on a background check as … having a mental illness because police haven't contacted them, because of their mental illness.”

Dispute turns into deadly shooting at Oklahoma Walmart

Scene of shooting at Glenpool Walmart
Occurred October 11, 2012.

An argument between two groups of people in the parking lot of the Walmart in Glenpool, Oklahoma.  The people got into their cars and move a few hundred yards away before starting to shoot at each other.  One man died from his injuries a little later at a trailer park.

From an initial report:

Glenpool Police Chief Dennis Waller told KRMG at the scene that the confrontation began at the Walmart Super Center, just southwest of W. 121st Street and U.S. 75 in Glenpool shortly before 9:30 p.m.
He says the argument involved two men in one vehicle and three men in another, described as a small, blue car.
The fight moved a few hundred yards south and west, near the Glenpool Conference Center and at that point evidence at the scene indicates that the victim exited the vehicle.
It's unknown at this point in the investigation whether anyone else left their cars.
That's when one of the men from the blue car produced a semi-automatic handgun and opened fire, striking the victim at least once.
Waller says the victim and his friend got back in their vehicle and left the scene, traveling to Barnhart Trailer Court on 141st Street, west of the city limits in Creek County.
Either en route to the trailer park or shortly after arriving, the gunshot victim died from his wounds.

According to a follow-up article, the victim is Mark Coble, 31.  The shooter, Robert Andrew Whitt, 27, has now been arrested.
