Marijuana heist in Washington Walmart parking lot turns into defensive shooting

Occurred October 1, 2014.

A man met with two other men in the parking lot of a Walmart store on the Tulalip Indian Reservation near Marysville, Washington, to sell medical marijuana, as he had arranged via Craigslist.  That's when one of the other men pulled out a gun to try to rob the seller, hit him in the face with the gun, and shot out a window.  The seller then pulled out his own gun and fired, hitting one of the attackers, wounding him in the shoulder.

The shooter later reported the shooting to the police.  The suspects were captured, including the wounded one at a hospital.

From an article:
[The seller] said the men hit him in the face with a handgun and shot out his front passenger-side window. He fired back with his own gun, and said his actions were self-defense, according to court records. ...

The Tulalip man told detectives that he sells medical marijuana and had taken out an ad on Craigs-list. He agreed to meet with the men Wednesday night.

After the shooting, the Tulalip man drove home to tell his wife what happened. They then went to the Washington State Patrol headquarters west of Marysville to report the shooting. The case was turned over to Tulalip Tribal Police who asked for assistance from the sheriff's office Major Crimes Unit.

At the hospital, the injured suspect told detectives he was shot at a party in Everett. When asked if he had been in the Tulalip supermarket parking lot earlier that evening, he allegedly became uncooperative.

FBI arrest of drug-dealing gang member leads to fatal shooting at Maryland Sam's Club store

Occurred April 11, 2014.

(UPDATED -- See below)

FBI went to arrest Jameel Kareem Ofurum Harrison, 34, in the parking lot of a Sam's Club in Owings Mills, Maryland, for drug offenses.  Harrison was a gang member with a long rap sheet.

When Harrison attempted to run over the officers, they opened fire, hitting him 19 times and killing him.

An investigation cleared the FBI agents of wrongdoing.

From an article:
In the Owings Mills shooting, the agents from the FBI's Baltimore field office, along with other law enforcement personnel, were wearing vests that identified them as law enforcement. They got out of their cars, surrounded Harrison's car, and told him to raise his hands and get out of the car.
One officer pulled his Chevrolet Uplander minivan in front of Harrison's 2013 Infiniti FX37, boxing him in. The officer got out and walked up to the front of Harrison's car; with his weapon drawn, he identified himself as a police officer and ordered Harrison to get out of the car. Another agent walked up to Harrison's driver-side door, and others also approached the vehicle and repeated similar commands.
The report says Harrison started to drop his hands "and a short time after that, the vehicle was driving in reverse," striking the car behind him. ...

The report says Harrison "put the vehicle in reverse, accelerated past two witness vehicles, then struck a third witness vehicle. At that point the driver made a movement that placed three agents in fear of death or injury, causing them to discharge their weapons," according to the Baltimore County Police Department's investigative report, which was reviewed by the state's attorney's office.
Harrison was pronounced dead at the scene.

Eric Santeliz, 20, met two other men in a car in the parking lot of a Walmart store in Tulsa, Oklahoma, for a drug deal.  He intended, instead, to rob the men.

But the other men pulled out a gun and shot Santeliz, wounding him.  Santeliz returned fire, killing one of the men and injuring another.

Police responded and took the survivors to the hospital, taking Santeliz into custody.

From an article:
One suspect was arrested at approximately 4:15 a.m. Tuesday morning. Eric Santeliz, 20, reportedly told officers that he had arranged the narcotics transaction knowing that he did not have enough money to complete the transaction.

The victim shot Santeliz and as he exited the vehicle, and then the victim was shot and killed, the police report states.
Tulsa police detectives say the gun shots were exchanged inside a dark colored Nissan Altima.
Responding officers evacuated the store after reports that the shooter may have gone inside. The store was shut down until investigators were able to clear the scene. One shopper told KTUL that there was no loud P-A system announcement.
Two handguns were found in the parking lot near several cars.
The victim died after being shot in the head and taken to St. John's hospital. The other shooting victims were taken to Saint Francis Hospital after one was shot in the leg and the other was shot in the arm.
This is the 20th homicide of the year in Tulsa.

Festus Walmart where shooting occurred (source)

Three men met in the bathroom at a Walmart store in Festus, Missouri, for a drug deal.  The deal went bad, then one of the men pulled out a gun and shot another through the hand and jaw.  The shooter and another man then fled, but were soon arrested.  They were released without charges after 24 hours as an investigation continued.

The victim is expected to survive.

From an article:
The Festus Police Department says that the man was shot through the hand and face.  The injuries appear to be non-life threatening.  The victim is being treated at a hospital in St. Louis.
Festus police were able to find the suspects about 20 minutes after taking a description from the victim.  A 33-year-old DeSoto man and a 30-year-old Festus man matched the description of the suspects.  Police believe that this is an isolated incident.  They say the victim and the suspects had some sort of relationship before the shooting.

From another article:
It was a drug deal, but police are unsure who was buying drugs from whom.
"That's what we're trying to investigate," Festus Police Chief Tim Lewis said today.
The two men arrested on suspicion of shooting the victim in the hand and jaw were released Thursday after being held for 24 hours, the maximum time state law allows people who have not been charged with a crime to be detained, while police piece together what happened, Lewis said.

"Drug deal gone bad" at North Carolina Walmart leads to shooting that ends at Sam's Club

Occurred May 11, 2014.

Dakota Buchanan, 20, initially called 911 to report that he had been robbed at gunpoint, at a Walmart store in Burnsville, North Carolina.  He later confessed, though, that it was actually a "drug deal gone wrong" and had been shot at by a suspect with a shotgun during a chase that started at the Walmart and ended near a Sam's Club in the town.

From an article:
A Burnsville man, who initially reported being a victim of an armed robbery in the Walmart parking lot, confessed to police that he was actually the victim of a “drug deal gone bad” Sunday night. ....
Hendersonville Police Capt. Bruce Simonds said a young male called 911 to report he had been the victim of an armed robbery at 11:28 p.m. Sunday in the Walmart parking lot. Dakota Buchanan, 20, of Burnsville told police that he had just exited his car when someone put a shotgun in his face, made him get into a vehicle and robbed him of $596. ...
They said this was a 'drug deal gone bad,'” he said. The victim, identified as Dakota Buchanan, later confessed that it was a bad drug deal, he added, but there was more to the story.
The suspects told police they met and exchanged money for 40 Dilaudid pills, a narcotic analgesic known as hydromorphone used to treat moderate to severe chronic pain. Buchanan said he was given a pill bottle of BBs instead and the suspects fled, Simonds said.
Buchanan chased them down near Sam's Club, where the suspects fired at Buchanan's car with a sawed-off shotgun and he fired back at them with a 9mm Ruger, Simonds said.
Both guns were recovered after the incident.

Drug bust goes bad and results in law officer and suspect shot and wounded at New Jersey Walmart

Occurred April 22, 2014.
Scene of shooting at Paramus Walmart (source)

An undercover police officer, posing as a drug dealer in a sting, was with two other individuals in a car in a busy Walmart parking lot in Paramus, New Jersey, to make a $400 marijuana deal.  That's when a third individual walked up to the car and said, "Give me everything you have," then fired on the officer, wounding him in the leg and hip.

Seven backup officers quickly sped into the parking lot and fired on the suspect, hitting him in the arm and leg.

Both men were hospitalized and are expected to survive. Luckily, no one else was injured.

From an article:
According to authorities, at least five shots were fired in the shopping plaza, which includes a Marshalls and a WalMart, after 1 p.m. Tuesday, the report said.
The officer was in his car making a marijuana purchase from one of the suspects as part of the sting drug operation, Bergen County Prosecutor Joh Molinelli said in a press conference about the shooting, NorthJersey.com reported. A second man approached him with a gun in what police believe was going to be a robbery, the report said.
Although undercover cops are taught to give in to such demands, Molinelli said the alleged gunman, Rafael Angel Vasquez Pina, 25, of Passaic, got "aggressive," causing the officer to take his gun, the report said.
During the subsequent scuffle between the suspects and officer, Pina was shot in the left arm and left leg, the report said. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the report said.
Pina faces an attempted murder charge, the report said. His two alleged accomplices, Melvin Guzman, 19, of Garfield and Patrick Morel, 21, of Clifton, face first-degree charges related to the shooting, the report said.
Molinelli said the shootout came out of what was supposed to be a relatively small $400 drug deal, the report said. As is typical in undercover investigations, the Paramus officer was not carrying a gun or badge, and was not wearing a bullet-proof vest, the report said.

Drug-related shooting in Mississippi Walmart Parking Lot

Occurred September 5, 2013.

A shooting occurred in the parking lot of a Walmart in Meridian, Mississippi, between gang members, over a drug deal.  One man was wounded and taken to the hospital.

A relative of the victim spoke out, and brought information to the local police, but the police have refused to use the information to investigate, according to him.

From an article and news video:
The day of the shooting, he called the detective with information. He said the detective called him back the first time, but when he tried to continue to contact police as he acquired more detailed and accurate information, but the process became frustrating.
"I tried to call the police department and talk to a detective. It's an automated system, and if you don't hit the right button, it'll hang up on you," he said. "I got upset and went to the police department."
After a long wait, he said he was only able to speak to someone after saying a few choice words and getting up to leave. The next time he had more information on the shooter, his calls were never returned. He said to his knowledge, nothing has been done with the information he provided.
"The only thing I didn't do was bring the gentleman down to the police department in my vehicle," said the relative.
His relative says the victim was involved in gang-related activity, and the shooting occurred over a drug deal in the Highway 19 Walmart parking lot. He's concerned the police department is not giving the case much priority since it's a gang related crime, but he's worried if they don't future retaliation could hurt some other innocent bystander.

Man shot in drug deal gone bad at Oregon Walmart

Occurred August 24, 2013.
Scene of shooting at Springfield Walmart
(source)

(UPDATED -- see below)

Two people went to a Walmart parking lot, in Springfield, Oregon, in a pre-arranged meeting with acquaintances involving a monetary transaction.  But the two people they went to meet instead attacked them.  One of the victims was beaten.  The other was critically wounded when he was shot three times (in the torso and extremities).

Police responded, and a chase ensued.  Both attackers were captured.

From an article:
Police on Saturday arrested Anthony James Hillenius, 20, and charged him with first-degree assault and two counts of first-degree robbery. Hillenius, who is also known as Anthony James Enlow, is suspected of firing the gun that sent one victim to the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds, Sgt. David Lewis said.
Also charged with two counts of first-degree robbery was Cory Lee Michael Monpas, also 20.
Lewis did not disclose the names of the two robbery victims but said they are not Lane County residents. The second victim was physically assaulted but not shot, Lewis said.
The first victim was shot in three different places, both in the torso and extremities, Lewis said. The victim was taken to PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield.
Police have conflicting reports on how many shots were fired, Lewis said. A .45-caliber handgun was confiscated as potential evidence, he said.
The two suspects and the two victims were recent acquaintances, Lewis said. The meeting at Walmart appeared to be pre-arranged, he said. “There was to be an exchange of money for something else,” he said.
Lewis said police wish to interview another person who was not present at the shooting but may have facilitated the meeting. He said that as of this afternoon police were not certain of that individual’s name.
Shortly after the shooting took place, two suspects were seen leaving the Wal-Mart parking lot in a blue Ford Thunderbird.
Troopers stopped the car about 15 minutes later and asked the driver and passenger to put their hands out of the vehicle, Springfield Police Sergeant Rich Charboneau said.
The driver sped off while the trooper was waiting for backup to respond.
Police said they eventually found the car on N Street after a short chase. Both the driver and passenger had ran from the car into the neighborhoods nearby.
Police used four K-9 units to search the area, and Sgt. Charboneau said  they quickly found one of the men, who they later identified as Anthony Enlow (also known as Anthony Hillenius).
A second suspect ran from the car onto Nighthawk Lane.
After searching the area, a K-9 unit located Cory Monpas hiding underneath a pickup truck canopy that was propped up behind a shed in the back yard of 550 W N. St.
Both men were booked at the lane county jail later that night. Enlow faces assault I charges and two counts of robbery I. Monpas was also charged with two counts of robbery I.
UPDATE (9/3/13):  According to a later article, the men had met to carry out a drug deal. The shooting victim's condition has been upgraded.

UPDATE  (4/17/14):  During the trial of the shooter, Enlow, the shooting victim testified about his fight for life, and that it was a drug deal gone bad.  From an article:

The shooting victim testified that he and a friend are both state-registered medical marijuana caregivers who brought approximately $14,000 to Springfield for a meeting with Enlow and another man, who allegedly had agreed to sell them 8 pounds of marijuana.
Prosecutors allege that Enlow shot the Portland man while both were in a vehicle, and that Enlow hadn’t actually brought any marijuana with him to the meeting, intending instead to rob the eventual shooting victim and his friend.
The shooting victim testified that he initially thought Enlow “was bluffing” when he pulled out a semiautomatic pistol and demanded money. The Portland man said he called for help, but that Enlow then “shot me. There was no struggle.”
A bullet entered the victim’s body through his right side, traveled through his chest and pierced his left hand. He testified that after being shot, he got out of the vehicle and ran toward Walmart while struggling to take a breath. “I couldn’t breathe,” he said. “I was dying.”
Medics arrived at the scene a short time later and took him to a hospital, where he was initially listed in critical condition. The man testified that he remains in pain from the injuries he suffered eight months ago. The Register-Guard generally does not identify victims of alleged crimes.
Enlow and another man, Corey Lee Michael Monpas, left the parking lot in a car after the shooting. Police arrested Enlow after stopping the vehicle on N Street in Springfield.
Monpas allegedly ran from the car but was taken into custody when officers tracked him down several hours later.
Monpas, a 20-year-old Cottage Grove resident, was sentenced to nearly six years in prison after pleading guilty earlier this year to second-degree assault. He admitted to having beaten the shooting victim’s friend with a stun gun during the incident.
The stun-gun assault victim also testified Wednesday, saying that he feared his friend was going to bleed to death outside the Walmart on Olympic Street.
“He was just covered in blood,” said the 21-year-old man, who is a Benton County resident. “I didn’t want to watch my buddy die.”

UPDATE (4/25/14):  Enlow was found not-guilty of attempted murder, but was found guilty of other crimes.  He has received 15 years sentence for those crimes.  From an article:
The shooting victim last week testified that he and a friend are both state-registered medical marijuana caregivers who brought approximately $14,000 to meet with Enlow and another man, who they said agreed to sell them 8 pounds of marijuana.
Prosecutors argued that Enlow did not intend to sell them marijuana, and instead went to the Walmart parking lot to rob the men. Enlow brought with him a bag full of blankets and pillows, not pot.
“This case is about two young men who admittedly had no jobs, no money and were interested in getting some,” Deputy District Attorney Erik Hasselman said during his closing arguments on Tuesday. “That’s the motive for this crime.”
Prosecutors also argued — and the jury disagreed — that Enlow attempted to kill the man when he allegedly shot him with a .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol.
Enlow’s attorney, Elizabeth Baker of Eugene, said Enlow and the shooting victim got into a scuffle in the backseat of a car at the Walmart over the weapon when the gun accidently went off and shot the man. Baker alleged that the victim was the one who brought the gun, not Enlow.
Baker asked the jury during her closing arguments on Tuesday to consider whether prosecutors could actually prove that Enlow wasn’t trying to defend himself in the car. Enlow and the other Cottage Grove man, Corey Lee Michael Monpas, left the parking lot in a car after the shooting.
Monpas, 20, was sentenced to nearly six years in prison after pleading guilty earlier this year to second-degree assault. He admitted to having beaten the shooting victim’s friend with a stun gun during the incident.

Occurred July 23, 2013.

Three teen boys from Texas, ages 16, 17, and 18, were on the run with a stolen car and wound up being captured in the parking lot of a Walmart in Carlsbad, New Mexico.  In the car with them were three realistic-looking pellet guns and drugs.  At least one of the guns had been reported stolen  from a Walmart store.

From an article:
Baca checked the license plate and VIN number on the vehicle and discovered the truck had been stolen out of Seminole, Texas, where the two juveniles, Javier Mares and Curtis Kelly, were from. Officer Norman Bowie found several homemade marijuana pipes, loose marijuana, three black pellet handguns and bottles of Crown Royal and Malibu Red inside the vehicle, according to the police report.
The report states officers caught the driver of the Toyota Tundra, later identified as Edgar Madrid, 18, of Hobbs, attempting to break into another vehicle south of Walmart.
Baca said an officer saw a gun on the ground in front of the Dumpster where Madrid was hiding and asked Madrid to raise his hands. Madrid then started to reach down to his waistband, most of his body still behind the Dumpster, Baca said. Officers reportedly did not know the gun was fake and had been stolen from Walmart until Madrid was placed in custody.

UPDATE (7/23/13): It turns out that the woman unintentionally shot herself, and likely was using drugs at the time.  From an article:

Court records say Williston police responded early Friday to a report that a woman had been shot in the Walmart area. Officers located Simon in the bathroom of Lonnie’s, a café near Walmart, and Simon told an officer she had been shot by one male in a group of three males.
However, the officer found a pistol in Simon’s purse and Simon then said the shooting could have been an accident but she didn’t remember how it happened, court records state. Court records accuse Simon of shooting herself in both legs while she was within one foot of at least one other individual.
Officers also observed a spoon with white residue consistent with methamphetamine inside the purse, as well as bras with Walmart price tags still attached. Simon also is charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class C felony.

Teen carries hidden gun and drugs into Arizona Sam's Club while evading police

Occurred May 29, 2013.

A 17-year old teen and a young man were fleeing police, in Yuma, Arizona, and sought cover inside a Sam's Club store.  The teen was carrying a backpack with a hidden .40-caliber handgun, cocaine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia.  They were arrested.

From an article:
According to the Yuma County Sheriff's Office, at about 6:15 p.m., deputies were sent to the area of South Avenue 4½E and East Levee Road after receiving reports that two groups of men had been in a fight involving a weapon.
One group of men allegedly fled the area inside a white pickup. That truck was spotted by deputies after it had left the levee road west of the confluence near the Yuma Palms Regional Center.
Deputies initiated a traffic stop on Pacific Avenue, and the driver of the truck, 20-year-old Victor Moreno, complied. He pulled into the Sam's Club parking lot, halting just west of the main entrance.
As deputies approached the truck, they said, Sambrano and the teen leaped out and ran into Sam's Club — the teen reportedly carrying the backpack later recovered by police.
Four other men in the truck did not flee: Victor Moreno, 21-year-old Corbin Anderson, 21-year-old Cody Trevino and 23-year-old Obed Moreno.
Sambrano and the teen who fled into the store were found a short time later with the help of Sam's Club security surveillance. They had gone to the clothing area where they allegedly shoplifted new outfits and changed into them in an attempt to evade capture.
During the search, deputies found the backpack that allegedly contained 38 grams of cocaine, 87 grams of marijuana, scales, packaging material and a .40-caliber handgun.
A YCSO K-9 unit was used to search the truck. Paris the working dog indicated the possible presence of contraband, leading deputies to reportedly discover 1.3 grams of pot.
Victor Moreno, Anderson and Obed Moreno were cited for allegedly possessing marijuana and Trevino for allegedly possessing marijuana and allegedly possessing an open container of alcohol. The four were then released.
The teen was arrested and booked into the Yuma County Juvenile Justice Center for the alleged possession of a dangerous drug and misconduct with a weapon.
Sambrano was arrested by Yuma police officers for suspected shoplifting and false reporting to law enforcement after allegedly providing false identification to police. He was booked into the Yuma County Adult Detention Center but has since been released.
The second group of men involved in the fight at the confluence has not been located.

Armed robbery and drug deal gone bad in Florida Walmart parking lot turns into car chase with police

Occurred April 1, 2013.

Three suspects were engaged in a drug deal in a Walmart parking lot in Sunrise, Florida, when the deal went bad.  Using guns, they committed an armed robbery, then fled.  Police got involved and chased the suspects, who bailed out after ramming a police car.  They have since been apprehended.

From an article:
It started around 4 p.m. when a drug transaction turned into an armed robbery in the parking lot of a Walmart at 3603 N. University Drive in Sunrise, Sgt. Rodney Hailey said.
Undercover officers in several unmarked patrol cars moved in to make the arrests but the suspects' car rammed a police car and sped away. That officer suffered minor injuries and was treated at Florida Medical Center, Hailey said.
"The other [officers] continued to chase them into the city of Lauderhill and ultimately the [suspect] vehicle crashed," he said. "We caught one person in the car and two others fled east into the neighborhood."
A perimeter was set up around the apartment complex at 2750 Northwest 56th Avenue. A SWAT team persuaded the remaining two suspects to surrender about two hours later, Hailey said.
"The suspects were armed with guns," he said, but no shots were fired during the chase and search.
