The Columbus officer who shot and wounded a woman in the parking lot of a West Side Walmart yesterday afternoon is a recent police-academy graduate receiving on-street training.
Police said the shooting by Officer Chase Rogers came during a chaotic attempt at a getaway by Stephanie Stegmeier, 29, Charles Stegmeier, 28, and Michael Beckelheimer, 25.
According to police, Stephanie Stegmeier was driving a car for Charles Stegmeier and Beckelheimer, who were suspected of shoplifting from the Walmart at 1221 Georgesville Rd. near I-270.
Police confronted the trio outside the store about 4 p.m.
Stephanie Stegmeier backed into a police cruiser and ran over Rogers’ foot in her attempt to escape, police said. At some point during that confrontation, Rogers fired his weapon at the car.
“The series of events happened in a matter of seconds,” said Sgt. Rich Weiner, a Police Division spokesman.
Stephanie Stegmeier was shot in the leg but kept driving.
She didn’t get far before getting stuck in heavy traffic, police said. Her car was blocked in by police about a mile west on Georgesville Road near Holt Road.
Stegmeier was treated at an area hospital. All three suspects have been charged with robbery for using force during the course of a theft, according to police.Walmart. Save money. Die faster.
