Why are there so many shooting incidents and other gun crimes on Walmart property?

Man shot in the head at North Carolina Walmart parking lot

Occurred August 10, 2013.


A fight broke out in the parking lot of a Walmart store in Burlington, North Carolina.  One man pulled out a gun and shot the other man, Shawn Jerrod Mapp, in the head, critically injuring him.  The shooter then fled.

According to a press release, at about 1:04 a.m., officers responded to a disturbance in the Garden Road store's parking lot and saw a large crowd dispersing quickly. 
Officers discovered shortly thereafter that a shooting victim from this incident had arrived at Alamance Regional Medical Center for treatment. The victim, Shawn Jerrod Mapp, of Burlington, was suffering from a single gunshot wound to the head. 
According to witnesses, the shooter was a black man wearing a grey T-shirt. 
Mapp was transported to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill for treatment. His condition was described as non-life threatening. 
There has been no motive established at this point and this incident is currently under investigation.

At 1:04 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to a disturbance in the store’s parking lot and saw a crowd of approximately 40 to 50 people quickly dispersing. 
Long said people were physically engaged in an altercation before shots were fired. 
According to the police report, one witness reported hearing six shots fired, and another witness told authorities a black male in a gray shirt with a gun got into a dark vehicle. 
The report also indicated witnesses were unsure in which direction the shooter left the scene.
