FBI arrest of drug-dealing gang member leads to fatal shooting at Maryland Sam's Club store

Occurred April 11, 2014.

(UPDATED -- See below)

FBI went to arrest Jameel Kareem Ofurum Harrison, 34, in the parking lot of a Sam's Club in Owings Mills, Maryland, for drug offenses.  Harrison was a gang member with a long rap sheet.

When Harrison attempted to run over the officers, they opened fire, hitting him 19 times and killing him.

An investigation cleared the FBI agents of wrongdoing.

From an article:
In the Owings Mills shooting, the agents from the FBI's Baltimore field office, along with other law enforcement personnel, were wearing vests that identified them as law enforcement. They got out of their cars, surrounded Harrison's car, and told him to raise his hands and get out of the car.
One officer pulled his Chevrolet Uplander minivan in front of Harrison's 2013 Infiniti FX37, boxing him in. The officer got out and walked up to the front of Harrison's car; with his weapon drawn, he identified himself as a police officer and ordered Harrison to get out of the car. Another agent walked up to Harrison's driver-side door, and others also approached the vehicle and repeated similar commands.
The report says Harrison started to drop his hands "and a short time after that, the vehicle was driving in reverse," striking the car behind him. ...

The report says Harrison "put the vehicle in reverse, accelerated past two witness vehicles, then struck a third witness vehicle. At that point the driver made a movement that placed three agents in fear of death or injury, causing them to discharge their weapons," according to the Baltimore County Police Department's investigative report, which was reviewed by the state's attorney's office.
Harrison was pronounced dead at the scene.

Man tries to rob Oklahoma Walmart, fails, then commits suicide when police confront him

Occurred June 19, 2014.

A man named Peter Cangemi III walked up to a cash register in a Walmart store in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and demanded cash with a gun.  When the clerk couldn't comply, the man fled.  Police chased after him, catching up to him in the bed of a truck where he had hitchhiked a ride.  The man then committed suicide with the gun, shooting himself in the head.

From an article:
Store employees told police the suspect had a gun and demanded money from the Customer Service desk. Employees couldn’t get the drawer open, so the man left without incident.
Police say witnesses saw the suspect leave on a motorcycle, which was later found abandoned in a wooded area about a mile north of the store.
Police soon after stopped a pick-up truck in the area. The driver and passenger followed orders given by the patrol officer, but a man in the bed of the truck stood up with a gun to his head, fired the gun and died at the scene.
The officer did not fire any shots.
The robbery suspect ended up in the truck after he asked the two for a ride.

Shootings At Walmart Stores Are On The Rise For The Third Year In A Row

Here at the Walmart Shootings blog, I make it my duty to chronicle every gun crime at Walmart stores, the world's largest retail gun seller.  I don't know why Walmart stores are a magnet for shootings, armed robberies by gunmen, conceal carry accidents, and gun thefts, but I believe the incidents speak for themselves.  All of those that I post are reports in the media.  How many never make it that far, I wonder.

I've been keeping track since the beginning of 2012.  Clicking on the tabs above will give you a listing of the incidents where shots were fired, and how many were wounded or killed.

But I've noticed something alarming:  the rate of shootings is steadily increasing.  It's so frequent, now, that I hardly have time to chronicle all of them, and fell behind for a while.  Sometimes there are as many as two or three incidents per day.  What does the data say?  The graph below sums it up pretty well.

In all of 2012, I found 53 shooting incidents on Walmart properties.  In 2013, there were that many incidents by the beginning of October.  This year, they have already matched that number by July.  If a linear regression is predictive, they are set to beat last year's high of 83 by a comfortable margin, perhaps around 100 incidents.

So I would like to ask the administration of Walmart:   Is this acceptable to you?  Is this just "the cost of doing business?"  If not, what do you intend to do about this?  Don't you think that selling guns and ammo, and having a permissive policy about conceal carry, might have something to do with these alarming numbers?  Don't you care enough about your customers and employees to provide them with a safer environment than this?

Here's the data, for all to see:

Conceal carry gun owner drops gun and shoots woman in Indiana Walmart

Occurred May 24, 2014.

A woman was shopping in a Walmart store in Columbus, Indiana, when a man with a legally concealed handgun and permit, Tony Ward, dropped his gun.  The gun discharged and hit the woman in the arm.

Woman shot in the eye by man with BB gun in California Walmart parking lot

Occurred May 17, 2014.
Scene of Stevenson Ranch Walmart shooting (source)

A woman named "Megan" got into an argument with 28-year old Cory Flenory, a parolee, in the parking lot of a Walmart store in Stevenson Ranch, California.  She got into her car, and the suspect followed, then shot into Megan's car with a BB gun, hitting her in the eye.

She was taken to the hospital and had hours of surgery.  It wasn't known whether she would regain eyesight.

The suspect was tracked down and arrested.

From an article:
A 28-year-old man was arrested after he was accused of shooting a woman in the eye with a BB gun following an argument at a Stevenson Ranch Walmart.
The shooting occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday near the store located near Old Road and Pico Canyon Road. Deputy Josh Dubin of the L.A. County Sheriff's Department told City News Service that there was an argument in the Walmart parking lot between the alleged gunman and the 22-year-old woman (who did not know each other) before she was shot.
The victim, who's only identified as Megan, and her boyfriend told authorities that the man followed them out of the Walmart parking lot and rammed his car into theirs, according to KTLA. They kept on driving and when they were stopped at a traffic light, the suspect reportedly drove next to them and fired a BB gun through the passenger-seat window, hitting Megan's right eye.
She was taken to a hospital and underwent seven hours of surgery. Doctors are hoping she'll regain her sight. Megan's aunt Diana told KTLA that Megan's vision in her left eye was already weak since childhood. Megan's boyfriend was not injured.
Deputies arrested Cory Flenory at 8 a.m. today at his home on the 28100 block of McBean Parkway in Valencia. He put up a fight and kicked out the window of the patrol car before the deputies pepper-sprayed him. He was booked on a mayhem charge and held without bail since he is a parolee.

Ohio teen fires shots in Walmart parking lot after car crash

Occurred May 17, 2014.

Two cars collided in a Walmart parking lot in Sandusky, Ohio.  A confrontation occurred after this, during which a 17-year old boy who was involved pulled out a .32-caliber handgun and fired three shots into the air, then he fled.

Police responded, and the boy was taken into custody.  He then led police to where he hid the gun.

Luckily, no one was injured.

From an article:
The gray car was trolling through the Walmart parking lot when it was struck by the white car. The occupants got out and began arguing, and a few other vehicles pulled up to the scene, too.
At some point, the Willoughby boy pulled out a .32-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver and fired into the air, the report said. The boy then fled on foot toward the Firelands medical building and the Super 8. The gray car then left the crash scene, but not before picking up the alleged shooter on Milan Road.
The boy’s appearance and clothing matched the description provided by witnesses. Police also viewed surveillance video from Walmart, which showed the boy firing the gun into the air before running off.
The three people who were in the vehicle with the boy said they had no idea who fired the shots. They were not charged, according to the report.
Police scoured the scene in hopes of finding the gun, but it was the boy who led them to it — he tossed the weapon into some bushes near the Super 8 when he ran from the scene, the report said.
The gun had three live rounds and three spent rounds, the report said. The boy was taken to the Erie County detention center.
The article didn't say where the boy got the gun and ammo.  Every gun in the hands of a child must first pass through the hands of an adult.

Political extremists kill two police and conceal handgun owner in pizza place and Nevada Walmart before being killed

Occurred June 8, 2014.
Scene of Las Vegas Walmart shooting (source)

Las Vegas police officers Alyn Beck, 41, and Igor Soldo, 31, were at a CiCi's pizza restaurant when they were ambushed by two shooters, a married couple, Jerad and Amanda Miller.  The shooters shouted "This is the start of a revolution!" and draped the dead bodies with a Gadsden flag.

The pair then went across the street to a Walmart store.  There they told everyone to get out, waving guns around and cursing.  From an article:

A law enforcement official who has been briefed on the incident said an officer — unconfirmed reports indicate it was Soldo — was refilling a soft drink when the female shooter approached him from behind and shot him in the head, killing him instantly.
The woman then shot the other officer several times as he drew his pistol. Gillespie said the officer was able to return fire but it was unclear if he hit anyone.
One officer was reported dead at the scene, while the other died later in surgery at University Medical Center.
Witnesses told police one of the shooters yelled “This is the start of a revolution” before shooting the officers. Gillespie later said he could not confirm that.
The shooters then stripped the officers of their weapons and ammunition and badges, according to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation. They then covered the officers with something that featured the Gadsden flag, a yellow banner with a coiled snake above the words, “Don’t tread on Me.”
The flag is named for Christopher Gadsden a Revolutionary War general who designed it. It has recently come back in vogue as an adopted symbol of the American tea party movement.
The shooters left the pizza parlor and headed into the Wal-Mart across the street at 201 North Nellis. Witnesses at the scene reported hearing shots fired in quick succession inside the Wal-Mart.
At a news conference at about 1 p.m. Assistant Sheriff Kevin McMahill said the male shooter, described as a tall white man, yelled “everyone get out” before shooting.

At this point, a citizen with a concealed handgun, Joseph Robert Wilcox, decided to intervene instead of flee.  Wilcox pulled his gun, but was ambushed and shot from behind by the female suspect, killing him.  From an article:

After executing two Las Vegas police officers at CiCi’s Pizza, Jerad Miller entered a nearby Wal-Mart, at Nellis Boulevard and Stewart Avenue, fired a round in the air and ordered everyone to leave, setting off a panic. It was at that point, instead of running, Wilcox approached Jerad Miller from behind.
Law enforcement sources said Wilcox, who had a concealed weapons permit and carried a handgun, was ready to “end it” when Amanda Miller, who was behind Wilcox, shot and killed him.

Wilcox had dreamed of being a police officer:

Wilcox had considered joining the Metropolitan Police Department several times, his mother said.

The pair of shooters then went deeper into the Walmart store.  From an article:

Both shooters were reportedly carrying large duffle bags, and a bomb squad was called to the scene. It’s unclear what, if anything, was found in the bags. A fire department official said the bomb squad response was “a precaution.”
Hector Garcia was shopping in Wal-Mart’s arts and crafts aisle toward the back of the store when he encountered a man brandishing a gun. He looked like he was in his 20s, was wearing camouflage and had a duffle bag draped over his shoulder.
He said the shooter appeared calm when he pointed the gun at him and said, “Don’t run.” The gunman, Garcia said, continued walking to the back of the store. Garcia said that store employees were evacuating customers through the back of the store.

More police and SWAT responded.  At this point there was a shootout (VIDEO), and both suspects were shot to death (initial reports were that the female had killed the male, but the police later refuted this and claimed police shot him; it appears that Amanda Miller committed suicide).

The Millers had armor-piercing bullets, were well-armed with a number of guns, and even smashed the gun case in the Walmart to continue arming themselves.  From an article:

Jerad and Amanda Miller wore adult diapers and carried four handguns, a shotgun, water and food, Gillespie said. The couple also smashed a Wal-Mart sporting-goods display case with a baseball bat to get more ammunition as they exchanged gunfire with SWAT officers, he said.
The husband and wife died June 8 after being cornered in the back of the store in the 15-minute shootout. In all, 52 shots were fired by the Millers and police inside the store. The husband and wife fired 36 shots, Gillespie said, and police fired 16.

The Millers had been part of the Bundy Ranch standoff, but were kicked out when their behavior was too extreme and dangerous.  Jerad Miller was also a felon.

UPDATE (7/13/14):   More details have been released.  According to an article:
According to radio traffic, store officials were following 26-year-old Cordell Lee Tebe of Konawa when he left the beer in the store and walked out. An Ada police detective was at the store and heard the call go out over the radio. The detective joined store loss prevention officers while they attempted to arrest Tebe for the Thursday theft.

Tebe ran away toward a pickup with three alleged accomplices waiting inside. Police said Tebe jumped in the passenger side of the pickup and told the driver to take off. When she refused, Tebe pushed her out of the pickup and took control of the vehicle.

The detective and an off-duty Roff reserve officer drew their handguns on Tebe and ordered him to stop. When Tebe backed the pickup toward the officers, they opened fire in an attempt to disable the vehicle.

Police hit and flattened one of the tires, but Tebe drove away. No one was injured in the incident. The detective and other police pursued Tebe down Country Club Road, then down A Street before he stopped the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.

Officers tackled him to the ground and arrested him. Two other people in the pickup, and the woman who was pushed out in the parking lot, were also arrested. Police did not release the identities of the three other suspects or the names of the officers involved by press time Saturday. Several stolen items were found inside the pickup, police said.
